Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Hospital Administrator, the Diagnostic Laboratory Services Manager provides technical and operational management, and administrative management to the Diagnostic Labs, which consists of Hematology, Chemistry, Cytology, Regenerative Medicine Lab, Central Lab Receiving (CLR), Microbiology, Parasitology, Immunology, Virology, Transfusion Medicine, PCR Lab, and Stone Analysis Lab. Responsible for ensuring that laboratory services are performed efficiently and in a service-oriented manner, meeting quality assurance standards, safety standards, and that clinicians, researchers, and students are provided with high quality laboratory support. This position manages a budget of $5 million, providing a wide scope of diagnostic laboratory, patient care services, and clinical research, located in two separate buildings. Additionally, the incumbent independently establishes departmental goals and objectives congruent with organizational strategy. This position maintains day-to-day operations; performs financial stewardship and budget development; promotes research, performs extensive human resource management including training, conflict management, and team building, and labor relations; oversees physical and intellectual resource management in compliance with department goals; ensures the appropriate equipment and facilities provide quality service to the VMTH, the campus research community, and non-university customers. In addition, this position oversees cross-training programs within the Diagnostic Labs in order to integrate Diagnostic Lab services within the VMTH.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • No minimum license requirement.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Experience in managing a veterinary laboratory including knowledge to maintain laboratory protocols and associated records in accordance with the IACUC, USDA, and AALAC protocols.
  • Knowledge and experience in administering safety program, laboratory quality control and quality assurance program and experience with assessing laboratory equipment, performing calibrations and minor repairs.
  • Supervisory skills to recruit, hire, train, coach, evaluate, assign tasks, motivate employees, and build staff morale including skills to mediate conflicts regarding staff, students, clinicians and clients, provide corrective and/or disciplinary action.
  • Management skills in problem-solving, leadership, strategic planning, budget development, and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge, expertise, and commitment to research, monitoring and the application of management to laboratory policy and the skills to articulate and translate that commitment into goals, objectives and opportunities.
  • Oral and written communication skills including the ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of people including veterinarians, residents, associated staff, animal care personnel, students, faculty and the public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in a field applicable to veterinary medicine or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Ability to perform collaborative clinical research in veterinary diagnostics.
  • Organizational, time management and analytical skills and proficiency in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner and on deadline.
  • Knowledge to maintain laboratory protocols and associated records in accordance with the VMTH.

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.
