STATUS: Part Time (daytime only)
DEPARTMENT: Disability Services

REPORTS TO: Director, Disability Services
PLACEMENT: Support staff, Grade7
HIRING RANGE: $45.00 hourly

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Disability Services, the sign language interpreter provides services to students who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or have other communication disorders. The sign language interpreter assists faculty, staff, students, and District 525 community members by providing sign language as a required accommodation under Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 at all campus locations during daytime hours. The Sign Language Interpreter must value diversity and inclusion to support the mission of the college, and promote a climate of mutual respect and full participation by providing an accessible experience for all students, staff, faculty, and community members.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Professionally represent Joliet Junior College and uphold the College's core values: respect, inclusion, integrity, collaboration, humor, well-being, innovation, quality, and sustainability.
2. Translate oral communication into sign language for students, faculty, staff, and community members during events including but not limited to scheduled classroom session(s), meetings, campus events, colloquia, telephone calls, and other situations as needed.
3. Interpret and transliterate American Sign Language and signed English into oral or written language for hearing individuals as well as others not conversant with sign language.
4. Follow the procedures related to scheduling, attendance and other procedures outlined in the Sign Language Interpreter Handbook.
5. Abide by the principles of ethical behavior as set forth by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
6. Maintain confidentiality of student documentation and records.
7. Maintain accurate and timely records.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Associate's degree.
2. Valid Illinois Interpreter license with Intermediate, Advanced, or Master level proficiency and/or Certification of BEI or RID.
3. Valid Illinois driver's license and a car.
4. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.
5. Demonstrated commitment to the college's core values of respect and inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor and well-being, innovation and quality.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor's degree.
2. Two years of educational interpreting experience.
3. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
4. Demonstrated multicultural competence.

WORK SCHEDULE
Schedule varies depending on department needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Normal office physical demands.
2. Ability to travel between campus locations.

WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Duties are performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.
