EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

- Education
PhD in Molecular Biology / Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry or equivalent
- Experience
1 year post-doctoral experience
Knowledgeable in Cell and Molecular Biology principles and applications, computer applications; effective written and verbal communication skills; PCR; sequencing; assay design and maintenance; and quality assurance
JOB DUTIES
- Responsible for the design, optimization and validation of new molecular assays that are identified by the department leadership. Responsible for training the clinical testing staff of the molecular diagnostics laboratory in running the assay(s) on patient material. Train and supervise the activities of the molecular diagnostics technologists assigned by the Lab Section Supervisor to this function. This position may transition into molecular diagnostics technologist with minimal development
- Investigate new platforms or methods that will enable the institution to offer state of the art diagnostics to our patients. Design, implement & conduct new assays for the clinically applicable biomarkers and infectious diseases.
- Gather data from the new assays, analyze for accuracy, specificity & sensitivity using appropriate statistical tools. Report the developmental activity to the appropriate managers on a timely basis. Maintain knowledge of related literature on biomarkers in cancer, inherited diseases and infectious diseases. Maintain knowledge in the field of personalized medicine, and infectious diseases.
- Participate in monthly journal clubs of the genetics diagnostics laboratory. Promote team work with the management and technical staff of the laboratory. Advise the management on the budgetary issues (equipment and supplies) related to the development of new assays. Takes the responsibility for proper maintenance and performance of the equipment used for development. Trouble shoots the assay problems, trains the technical staff in trouble shooting strategies and assay theory.
- Perform clinical testing for reportable patient results when needed at discretion of the Lab Section Supervisor or Technical Director. Role change between molecular developmental scientist and molecular diagnostics technologist as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
