Sr Research Scientist

Promega Corporation
United States, Wisconsin, Madison
Jun 07, 2025
Job Description
OUR TEAM:
We are an experienced team of innovative protein engineers using state-of-the-art molecular evolution, machine learning, and data-driven design to create enzymes and other proteins that power life science research, diagnostics, and applied technologies. We operate in a highly collaborative and intellectually rich environment-working closely with structural biologists, computational modelers, organic chemists, and assay developers. While we work as a team, each scientist is encouraged to grow their own ideas, develop technical leadership, and shape the future direction of our platform capabilities. Curiosity, rigor, and a deep respect for the molecules we design define our scientific culture. Our goal is to develop robust, ubiquitously deployable platform technologies with a proactive focus on disruptive innovation rather than reactive responses to market trends. This position reflects a strategic investment in Promega's capacity to originate proprietary technologies and advance the frontiers of protein design.
YOUR ROLE:
As a member of the Protein Design team, you will help us invent and optimize high-performance enzymes and other proteins that unlock new product opportunities. You will use modern protein engineering strategies-from structure-guided mutagenesis to machine learning-driven design, and have access to cutting-edge automation and analytical resources. We value both collaboration and scientific independence: you'll contribute to team initiatives while also having the opportunity to lead projects and, when appropriate, mentor others. You must champion novel scientific ideas and guide project direction, while fostering an inclusive environment that values and integrates feedback from colleagues with diverse and complementary expertise or deep institutional knowledge. Your contributions will help shape Promega's future in enzyme and protein-based innovation.
YOUR EXPERIENCE:
You are a skilled and curious scientist with a graduate degree (M.S. and 3+ years of experience or Ph.D.) in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, or a related field. You demonstrate deep expertise in protein biochemistry and are driven by the real-world impact and functional promise of the proteins you engineer-treating methods as tools to achieve meaningful biological outcomes, not as ends in themselves. Whether you are a recent graduate or a more seasoned scientist, we are looking for someone excited to help define what protein design means at Promega in the years ahead. Experience with machine learning tools, structural modeling, or protein engineering platforms is strongly desired-but above all, you are a continual learner, an analytical thinker, and a generous collaborator.
CORE DUTIES:
1. Design, express, purify, and characterize engineered proteins with biochemical rigor.
2. Understand the broader purpose of your work and contribute creatively to project direction.
3. Propose and test hypotheses using experimental approaches rooted in biochemistry, biophysics, and molecular biology.
4. Maintain high standards for scientific ethics, data integrity, and safety.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Ph.D. or M.S. (and 3+ years of experience) in a relevant scientific discipline.
2. Hands-on experience with recombinant protein workflows.
3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Ability to work at a lab bench or biosafety cabinet for extended periods.
2. Ability to wear appropriate PPE.
3. Ability to use standard laboratory and computer equipment.

At Promega, we are committed to building a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve and creating a culture where everyone belongs. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we welcome and encourage applications from all backgrounds, ensuring that employment decisions are made fairly and equitably.
