Department Summary

Paint shop is responsible for painting, refinishing, and related repairs to various surfaces on campus. This includes daily work orders and new construction and renovation projects.

Position Overview

Enforce safety and sanitation regulations. Fill cracks, holes, or joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives. Cover surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting. Smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, or sanding machines. Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors to determine work requirements. Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats. Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, or other finishes to equipment, interior/exterior of buildings, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers. Mix and match colors of paint, stain, or varnish with oil or thinning and drying additives to obtain desired colors and consistencies. Calculate amounts of required materials and estimate costs, based on surface measurements or work orders. Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly. Plan and establish work schedules, assignments and production sequences to meet production goals. Inspect materials, products, or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions Remove old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or using water or abrasive blasting.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of job-related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Knowledge of painting techniques and surface preparation methods for interior and exterior building materials.
* Skill in applying paints, primers, and sealers using brushes, rollers, sprayers, and electrostatic equipment.
* Ability to prepare surfaces by cleaning, sanding, filling holes, and masking areas to prevent overspray or damage.
* Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and specifications to determine job requirements.
* Skill in mixing paints to match desired colors or consistencies for specialized applications.
* Ability to erect and work from scaffolding, ladders, and rigging in compliance with safety codes.
* Strong attention to detail in finishing surfaces for a professional, long-lasting appearance.
* Knowledge of institutional painting needs, including working around sensitive equipment and clinical environments

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications: Must be able to work weekends and after 5 PM if needed. 3 years' experience in interior and exterior paint application in medical, industrial or residential settings to include sheet rock hole repair, and the tape and bedding process.

Job Duties:



  • Ability to operate computer and complete work orders from work order system.
  • Complete office, classroom, laboratory renovations, repairs, and refinishing of any surface or equipment on campus
  • Maintenance of the paint shop, vehicles, equipment, and materials.
  • Complete annual continuing education

Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.

Low temperatures.

Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.

Work with toxic or caustic chemicals.

Elevated temperatures.

Exposure to moving mechanical parts or vibration.

Noisy environments.

Small and/or enclosed spaces.
