Job Summary

South Mountain Community College is currently hiring a full-time Construction Trades (Electrical) residential instructor to start in Fall of 2025.

This position supervises and instructs a diverse population of students in lecture, lab, and on-line settings on topics in Construction/Electrical. This role uses traditional, nontraditional, innovative, and applied methods of instruction, assessment and appropriate technologies to engage students and to promote student success. The Carpentry faculty member also demonstrates a commitment to service excellence, innovation, integrity, and student academic success in the performance of job duties.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises and instructs a diverse population of students in both a classroom and shop/lab to prepare students for employment in the field of Electrical; prepares and provides course syllabi and instructional materials for students; evaluates the knowledge/skill gained by students in the program and monitors their scholastic records; prepares and grades exams; keeps appropriate records of testing and grading; maintains student discipline through effective classroom management; maintains a safe, orderly and up-to-date shop/lab area; and advises students regarding AAS degrees and Certificates of Completions.
  • Coordinates our Electrical Certificates of Completion and the ongoing development of a Construction/Electrical Program; develops curriculum and courses for students; promotes the Program through presentations, event displays, brochures, and tours of our CTI facilities; establishes and maintains industry/university/government relationships including recruiting programmatic partnerships, as well as helping students gain hands-on experience in their areas of study through jobs/internships; provides leadership, direction and assistance to the adjunct faculty, staff and temporary employees; and advises students regarding our Certificates of Completion.
  • Assists and responds to problems/requests from students; is available during in-person office hours; uses electronic communication to stay in touch with students; serves on collaborative work teams with faculty, staff, administration and community stakeholders; collaborates with Faculty to complete division initiatives; and other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in college and district activities, including department/division meetings, committees, workshops, and projects; maintains office hours to assist and advise students; attends conferences, seminars, and/or workshops to develop and enhances their own knowledge/skill to remain current with new trends and developments in both their field and Education in the Community College; completes FERPA, 45th Day roster verification and assigns grades on time; engages in the academic life of the college by participating in District wide and campus committees; and other duties as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

For occupational disciplines, a combination of education and/or experience is required to qualify. A faculty may qualify with any of the following:
  • Five years of occupational experience in the field to be taught OR
  • Three years of occupational experience in the field to be taught and a Bachelor's degree or higher OR
  • A Master's degree or higher in the teaching field
  • A Journeyman certification in the field to be taught.


Desired Qualifications

A. Bachelor's degree or higher.
B. Six (6) years of hands-on, full-time, wage-earning experience directly in the carpentry field.
C. Three (3) years fulltime or more experience teaching or training in a professional environment
D. Served an approved 4-year apprenticeship showing journey status
E. Industry Certifications such as:
NCCER - Certified Plus" from The National Center for Construction Education and Research; NOCTI - National Occupational Competency Testing Institute; OSHA 30 - 30-Hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration training
F. Experience using a Learning Management System (LMS) such Canvas or Blackboard on a higher education setting.
G. Basic computers skills including email, internet, Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
