SONiC - Test Framework Engineer 4

Location: Sunnyvale, CA

We are seeking a skilled SONiC Test Framework Engineer to design, build, and maintain a SONiC test infrastructure from scratch, primarily focusing on virtual testbeds. The engineer will be responsible for deploying and automating SONiC VM test environments to validate network functionality, performance, and scalability in a data center setting. This role requires expertise in networking, virtualization, automation, and test frameworks to ensure robust testing of SONiC-based network devices. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with hands-on experience in open-source network operating systems and a passion for automating complex test environments.

Responsibilities
- Testbed Design and Deployment:
- Build SONiC virtual testbeds from scratch using KVM, Docker, and Open vSwitch to simulate data center topologies (e.g., T0, T1, T2).
- Configure Devices Under Test (DUTs) and neighbor devices using minigraph XML and topology definition files.
- Validate testbed connectivity and functionality before test execution.
- Automation:
- Develop and maintain Ansible playbooks to automate testbed setup, SONiC configuration, and test execution.
- Write Python scripts for topology setup, test automation, and log analysis.
- Integrate automation workflows with the sonic-mgmt framework to streamline testing processes.
- Testing and Validation:
- Deploy and manage test automation frameworks like PTF (Packet Test Framework) to validate SONiC's control plane and data plane.
- Generate and analyze network traffic using tools like Scapy and tcpdump to verify protocol behavior (e.g., BGP, VXLAN, VLANs).
- Execute functional, feature, and performance test cases, reporting results and identifying defects.
- Troubleshooting and Debugging:
- Diagnose and resolve issues in virtual testbeds, including VM, container, and network connectivity problems.
- Analyze logs from SONiC VMs, Docker containers, and virtual switches to pinpoint root causes.
- Collaborate with developers to address defects and improve test coverage.
- Documentation and Collaboration:
- Document testbed setup procedures, configurations, and test cases for team reference.
- Contribute to the SONiC open-source community by sharing scripts, reporting issues, or submitting pull requests.
- Work closely with network engineers, developers, and test teams to align testing with project goals.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Optimize testbed performance and scalability for large-scale testing scenarios.
- Stay updated on SONiC advancements, networking protocols, and test automation trends to enhance the framework.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
