Position description

Assistant Researcher (JPF10394)

The UCLA Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) invites applications for an Assistant Researcher who will conduct satellite-informed water and carbon cycle model-data integration using the CARDAMOM Carbon-Water Bayesian model-data integration framework. The candidate will help advance global land biosphere estimates of biomass, water storage, runoff, evapotranspiration, riverine H2O and C fluxes and associated C cycling underlying process controls by (a) jointly using satellite observations of water and carbon cycle states and fluxes, (b) advancing the representation of critical processes in biosphere modeling tools, and (c) quantifying the broader impact of water and carbon cycle fluxes on the temporal evolution land biosphere carbon, water and energy states. The successful applicant will specifically support carbon and water cycle science, applications and process model innovations using CARDAMOM-based Bayesian inference of land biosphere processes. The candidate will present their research at conferences and in journal articles and will assist in the archival and dissemination of satellite-informed water and carbon cycle products.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications

Candidate Qualifications:

  1. A PhD in Ecohydrology, Biogeosciences, or related scientific field.
  2. Strong background in synergistic use of multiple satellite observation types to investigate decadal water and/or carbon cycles.
  3. Experience in the use and development of land biosphere process models, soil water and energy cycle models, or related land modelling efforts.
  4. Experience with Bayesian inference and/or model-data fusion theory and application.
  5. Strong knowledge of how eco-hydrological processes affect photosynthesis, transpiration and associate land-atmosphere water and carbon exchanges.
  6. A record of relevant peer-reviewed publications, datasets and presentations at major international scientific meetings and conferences.
  7. Experience in C scientific programming, statistical analysis, and data visualization.

Specifically, technical and extensive experience in the development and application of Bayesian model-data integration with water and carbon observations is necessary. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated, and have excellent oral and written communication skills, and be eager to work with scientists and support staff from JPL and elsewhere in a highly collaborative project environment.
