The BNSF Railway Engineering Department is responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining the infrastructure of our extensive rail network. This crucial role involves applying advanced engineering principles to address complex challenges, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our operations. This is a full-time positionlocated in Kansas City, KS.

Travel may be required approximately 40-50%

Key responsibilities may include:

Organize, coordinate, manage, and support Signal detectors to ensure the safe, efficient, and economical delivery of installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, and operating functions.

Manage Signal detectors design, development, implementation, delivery, maintenance, and continuous improvement.

Provide leadership, training, and technical support to Signal craft teams, managing resources and schedules to ensure projects meet deadlines, budgets, and regulatory requirements.

An active commitment and urgency for establishing safer work practices toward the ultimate goal of an injury-free work environment.

Assess new system hardware designs to ensure optimal functionality, maintainability, and comprehensive hardware and software testing.

Maintain positive working relationships with vendors and individuals at all levels of the organization, including working on complex issues within and across departmental boundaries.

Foster a positive, inclusive work culture that inspires excellence, encourages innovation through diverse perspectives, and promotes mutual respect.

Collaborate with other departments and vendors on the warm bearing system and analyze defect detector reports to support failure analysis, trends, and performance

Manage project capital and operating budgets, analyzing for cost-effectiveness and accuracy.

Inspect detector locations across the system, including outside detector manufacturers and BNSF's facilities. Review procedures and recommend and/or implement technical solutions for problems to manufacturing and field operations personnel.

Complete assigned duties as required by Engineer Signals III.

Daily work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Relocation assistance may be offered based on business needs.

Basic Qualifications:

MUST HAVE SUCCESSFULLY PASSED THE SIGNAL FLS TECHNICAL EXAM OR CURRENTLY HOLD ONE OF THE FOLLOWING POSITIONS TO BE CONSIDERED: MANAGER SIGNAL SHOP, PROJECT ENGINEER: SIGNAL, SUPERVISOR SIGNAL/SIGNAL CONSTRUCTION, OR DETECTOR ENGINEER

**Only current BNSF employees who are FLS Certified will be considered for this position.**

  • High School diploma or GED, plus 2-3 years of formal technical training.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in design, construction and maintenance of railroad wayside signal systems.
  • Must have working knowledge of the application of electromechanical systems, electronics, microprocessor-based instrument/industrial control systems, and railroad control system data protocols.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, communication, computer, and organizational skills are required. Experience should include time management, problem-solving, people, and multi-tasking skills to work through the varied initiatives promptly and effectively.
  • Understanding of BNSF Signal Instructions and BNSF Test Procedures.
  • Understanding of BNSF Signal Standards.
  • A thorough knowledge of safe railroad operations and proven technical competencies is required, preferably in Maintenance of Way Operating Rules, BNSF General Code of Operating Rules, and BNSF Maintenance of Way Safety Rules.
  • Knowledge of the General Code of Operating Rules and FRA rules/regulations applicable to these systems.
  • Possess working knowledge of railroad union agreements.
  • A strong drive for results, high energy level, and an appropriate sense of urgency for taking action and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment.
  • Produce written communications and deliver verbal communications that are consistently clear, concise, and error-free.
  • Use administrative systems to sort through and track large amounts of information. Interpret data and identify leading and lagging metrics for developing tactical and strategic objectives. Ability to make decisions and take action considering a wide range of factors beyond the immediate situation with a sound understanding of the future desired state of the organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or other Engineering related field.
  • Five (5) years Signal experience with specific exposure to detector systems, design, construction, maintenance, and supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of BNSF Engineering processes.
  • Signal Cutover II Qualification obtained
