THE POSITION

The Department of Conservation & Natural Resources is actively looking to hire a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee who will play a crucial role in the skilled operation and maintenance of two sewage treatment facilities. This position encompasses overseeing the wastewater operations at the Park's Visitor Center, as well as managing the water treatment facility located at the campground. The operator will be responsible for ensuring the functionality of all associated equipment, which includes pump stations, sewage and water lines, manholes, and other essential infrastructure. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee will engage in duties associated with the maintenance and operation of the wastewater treatment plant at Ohiopyle State Park to learn basic competencies and skills, and to prepare the employee to become certified as wastewater treatment plant operator. Some of the duties will include assisting the operation, maintenance, evaluation, and repair of essential equipment used in the sewage treatment process, including electric motors, pumps, compressors, valves, sand filters, chlorinators, aerators, water softeners, flow meters, and liquid level mercury switches. Additionally, you will collect water samples and perform chemical tests to measure important parameters such as pH levels, chlorine residuals, settleable solids in both influent and effluent, and the biochemical oxygen demand of the sewage effluent.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Seasonal full-time employment. This is a seasonal, full-time position with no healthcare benefits. There is not an option to buy into health care benefits. The season runs from approximately March 2025 until November 2025 at which time the employee will be placed on leave without pay. The employee will automatically be returned to employment approximately March 2026.
  • Shift hours and days vary due to operational need, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Weekends, holidays, and all shifts as needed at 37.5 hours per week
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Six months of building maintenance or trades experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.
  • All employees must obtain, within the probationary period, a valid Operator's Certificate, or an Operator in Training Designation issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater System Operators as a wastewater treatment plant operator that is equal to or greater than the classification and subclassification of the wastewater system to be operated or maintained. Class D subclass 1.
