Associate Director of Student Affairs - University Crossing, Fox Common and Gaming Operations

General Summary of Position:

The Associate Director is a full-time, 12-month position reporting to the Director of Student Affairs to provide leadership and vision for Rowdy's Esports Arena, University Crossing, and Fox Common staff and space users.

The primary responsibilities of the Associate Director pertain to the day-to-day management and oversight of events at Rowdy's Esports Arena, University Crossing, and Fox Common. The Associate Director is responsible for managing a student staff that supports approximately 8,000 events each year for students, faculty, staff, and guests. Space management includes coordinating facility usage, facilitating various room setups, space approval via campus scheduling software, technology training and implementation, conference and food service support, maintenance, and training staff on emergency procedures.

The Associate Director will also have specific oversight of Rowdy's Esports Arena. Oversight of space will include day-to-day operations of an Esports program that supports on-campus teams competing at various levels of play. The Associate Director will work with the director to manage the budget for staff and day-to-day operations to support team and individual play. The Associate Director will also work with campus partners in IT to maintain and replace hardware and software for stations as needed per university standards.

Other responsibilities include direct supervision, recruiting, training, schedule coordination, and evaluation of student staff and (2-3) graduate staff members. This individual will also monitor and approve time for the student employees per university policies.

As part of the Student Affairs professional staff, the Associate Director builds a sense of community among UMass Lowell students, staff, faculty, and alumni while providing a welcoming experience to community partners and visitors.

Specific Responsibilities Include:



  • Program Oversight: The Associate Director, along with the director, is responsible for the strategic direction, daily operations, and program development of the university's state-of-the-art esports facility. This role supports competitive and recreational gaming, fosters community among students, and advances the university's academic and co-curricular esports initiatives. The Associate Director will collaborate across departments to ensure the venue supports student engagement, wellness, academic integration, and external partnerships.
  • Facilities Management: The Associate Director will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of University Crossing (outside of Rowdy's Esports Arena) and Fox Common. This requires successful coordination with other departments to meet the service and programming needs of the students, faculty, staff, tenants, and visitors to the facilities.
  • Training and Supervision: The Associate Director will develop and implement a model program, based on student development theory, for recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating student employees in their various roles to work within University Crossing, Rowdy's Esports Arena, and Fox Common.
  • Customer Service: Promote the University's commitment to customer service.
  • Leadership: The Associate Director will assist in developing the vision for University Crossing, Rowdy's Esports Arena, and Fox Common as well as identifying long and short-term goals for resources and services. The Associate Director will also work with the director to incorporate assessment plans into all areas for well thought-out and informed decisions.
  • Marketing and Branding: The Associate Director will participate in efforts to educate members of the University and external communities about the role of University Crossing, Rowdy's Esports Arena, and Fox Common within UMass Lowell and the opportunities, services, and resources available within each facility.


Minimum Qualifications (Required):



  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree in higher education/student services or related field preferred
  • Strong knowledge of competitive and casual gaming communities, platforms, and technologies.
  • (5-8) years of experience related to college unions, student event support, hosting activities on a college campus, and/or working with food service providers for events.
  • Demonstrated ability in space management, staff supervision, marketing, financial operations, and working with diverse populations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Expertise with 25 Live, Microsoft Visio and Engage Platform
  • Expertise with Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Hopin, and/or any other video conferencing software
  • Knowledge of, or experience with mixing live sound
  • Knowledge of, or experience with staff and/or program assessment in higher education
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with students and other stakeholders
  • Understanding of and ability to apply student development concepts and theory
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Demonstrated knowledge and support of college union philosophy is important
  • Demonstrated experience in facilities management
