  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree with sustainability-related coursework
  • Two or more years of experience in program development, management, and coordination

Position Summary
This position reports to the Director of Sustainability. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting programs to minimize waste generation and maximize resource recovery at UGA. The role involves collaborating with various departments, educating employees and other stakeholders, and mentoring and supervising students to support a culture of sustainability and waste reduction at UGA
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Thorough understanding of sustainability, waste reduction, and circularity
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to create and deliver compelling reports and educational / outreach presentations
  • Ability to understand and analyze complex systems and data streams
  • Excellent time management and the ability to advance multiple priorities at once
  • Experience managing student interns or volunteers
  • Ability to develop and maintain partnerships and collaborate effectively to advance shared goal


Physical Demands

  • Walking, stooping, bending, squatting, lifting, climbing stairs, sitting, and standing throughout an 8-hour shift.
  • Lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Exposure to potential workplace hazards such as sharp objects or hazardous materials.
  • Work outdoors in various weather and conditions as needed to support an array of waste reduction programs.
  • Work on a computer up to 8 hours per day.

Develop and coordinate campus waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting programs

  • Maintain existing and develop new programs to engage students, faculty, and staff to reduce waste at UGA.
  • Coordinate with Facilities Management Division Building Services to install zero waste infrastructure in campus facilities and educate the campus community on proper disposal methods.
  • Support the UGA Green Labs / Sustainable Science program to reduce waste in UGA laboratories.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership of the student-run campus compost program.
  • Manage and track litter traps in campus streams to document and remove plastics and other debris.
  • Support the UGA Swap Shop and water bottle reuse program to promote circularity among students and others on campus.
  • Develop and oversee hard-to recycle materials and construction & demolition debris collection and recycling programs.
  • Measure costs, benefits, and other outcomes of waste reduction initiatives and develop recommendations to enhance efforts to best align with UGA goals and priorities.

Establish and cultivate campus and community partnerships to reduce waste at UGA

  • Collaborate with UGA Housing, Dining Services, Athletic Association, and other departments to support and enhance waste reduction strategies within their areas of responsibility.
  • Engage with students, faculty, and academic programs to use the campus as a living laboratory for teaching and learning waste reduction practices.
  • Support and enhance the Zero Waste Events program to help UGA departments implement sustainability and zero waste practices.
  • Coordinate with Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste and Recycling to maintain and expand integrated recycling and composting programs at UGA.
  • Develop and support strategic partnerships that advance capacity to implement zero waste practices at UGA.
