Essential Job Duties
Summary of Position:
This postdoctoral research scholar position will provide critical support to the NC State University Climate and Sustainability Academy's efforts to engage members of internal and external communities on issues of landscape and environmental change confronting the state, nation, and globe. In particular, the postdoctoral research scholar will work with university and external partners to determine issues, access necessary datasets, and develop data and visualization tools to be used in facilitated dialogues during ongoing series of in-person workshops.
The postdoctoral research scholar will facilitate the real-time deployment of data, models, novel engagement processes (e.g., serious games), and related visualizations (e.g., figures, maps, network graphs) to help workshop participants make informed decisions on various topics relating to landscape and environmental change (e.g., urban growth, climate hazards resilience, resource management). In carrying out this work, the postdoctoral research scholar is expected to work closely with Climate and Sustainability Academy leadership, the NC State Data Science and AI Academy, the NC State Institute for Emerging Issues, and University Libraries. This position will strengthen the ability of NC State University to further its land grant mission, leveraging on-campus expertise and technology resources to proactively engage community members and decision-makers on complicated, scientifically-complex questions.
Other Work/Responsibilities
Primary Duties:

  • Collaborates with university and external partners to identify focal issues and overall project needs for dialogue process.
  • Collaborates with university and external partners to identify relevant parties for participation, including both on-campus experts and off-campus stakeholders.
  • Determines how to support dialogue through appropriate use of data, models, or engagement processes (e.g., serious games)
  • Works with engagement specialists to collaborate with stakeholders on identifying, synthesizing, and/or generating data relevant to facilitate dialogue.
  • Devises, populates, analyzes, and interprets visualizations to facilitate dialogue, either individually or in partnership with appropriate relevant expertise.
  • Leads or collaborates with university partners to document and publish dialogue outcomes.
  • Leads or collaborates on proposals to fund focal issue dialogues.
  • Offers recommendations for dialogue process improvement.
  • Mentors students in analytics, visualization, facilitation, and evaluation in support of dialogue processes.

Requirements and Preferences


Work Schedule Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm (additional work outside of standard hours may be required due to business needs)
Department Required Skills
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a discipline related to data science, climate science, social sciences, marine science, environmental science, policy or planning, community development, natural resources management, or other closely related field.
  • Experience in quantitative modeling and visualization.
  • Ability to self-motivate, to work independently and as a member of a team, and to develop annual plans of work that include measurable outcomes.
  • Relevant skills applicable to data and visualization, public speaking, and technical writing.
  • Strong ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, particularly pertaining to interpreting/translating research-based technical information for the understanding and use by decision makers, practitioners, policy makers and the public.
  • Strong ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment and to develop or support productive partnerships and collaborations.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be willing to travel for work.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing data-driven decision support tools.
  • Experience providing education and technical assistance to communities or related interest holders, training and mentoring students.
  • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams, partnering with climate scientists, social scientists, marine scientists, environmental scientists, policy or planning professionals, community development professionals, and/or natural resources management professionals.
  • Experience working with a wide range of internal and external university partners.
  • Record of scholarly publications and applicable project experience demonstrating use of data, models, or various other engagement processes (e.g., serious games) that facilitate community-engaged dialogue.
  • Experience in applying for external resources to support applied research and outreach programming, including federal, state, NGO or philanthropic grants and fee-for-service contracts.
  • Demonstrated success with applying for external resources to support applied research and outreach programming, including federal, state, NGO or philanthropic grants and fee-for-service contracts.
  • Experience in project management, either individually or as part of inter- or multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience mentoring student research assistants.
  • Familiarity of North Carolina's environments and issues, partnerships, networks and existing efforts and programs that address these issues, particularly as they relate to climate and sustainability.
