POSITION SPECIFICS

The College of Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University is a recognized world leader in impactful teaching and learning; research; and service to the University, the profession and society. We seek innovative, knowledgeable, and collaborative individuals to join our academic advising community in providing academic advising for undergraduate students.

The academic adviser will be geographically embedded within a College of Engineering academic department providing direct academic support and guidance to students in their second year through graduation in a specific major. As a member of a larger academic advising community, advisers will work closely with department faculty to assist students in their respective major navigate unique learning experiences and assist with determining appropriate academic plans and collaborate with academic advisers from other academic departments and the Engineering Advising Center.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

If filled as Academic Adviser - Advanced Professional, this position requires: Master's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None If filled as Academic Adviser - Intermediate Professional, this position requires: Master's Degree 1+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Advise undergraduate students about academic programs, as well as assess other needs and make professional referrals.

  • Maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records.

  • Guide students in course selection and scheduling.

  • Resolve academic problems, escalating unusual matters.

  • Identify and monitor academic progress.

  • Participate in various college programs, such as New Student Orientation, Accepted Student Programs, and group advising presentations.

  • Contribute to collaborative innovation and process development and implementation.

  • Interact with students, faculty, parents, and various college and university staff members.

  • Developing relationships with key members of the academic community.

  • Enthusiasm for working with college students and helping them define and achieve their own successes

  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Demonstrated knowledge of applying student and identity development and growth mindset theories

  • Desire to develop and execute high-quality academic advising best practices and standards

  • Ability to interface effectively with a diverse community inclusive of students, staff, faculty, and administrators

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team, with a desire to promote college and institution initiatives and priorities

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, and a desire to work with students in a high-volume work environment are necessities for success in this position.

  • The successful candidate will have a background in working with high school or college-aged students and a proven track record and commitment to serving diverse student populations.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $42,100.00 - $67,300.00.
