Job Summary

The I&E Specialist will work in Innovation Ventures (IV), primarily in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) section of IV, to cultivate a vibrant and productive Ecosystem of Innovation and Entrepreneurship for UCSF faculty, staff, students, trainees, and learners. The UCSF IV I&E section also has intentional and robust external-facing engagements with our vibrant and varied multiple-stakeholder ecosystem. The I&E specialist will interface with a variety of internal and external participants in this ecosystem, including those from academia, government, nonprofit and industry settings.

The role involves close collaboration with the ED of I&E in strategic planning and operations of the key internal and external-facing I&E functions. The role also includes managing specific components of Innovator Enrichment programs and the IV Event Services core. In addition, the role will involve advising and ad hoc support of the Catalyst program. Responsibilities include defined program development, planning and evaluation, review of and dissemination of key metrics for each.

A. The I&E Specialist will support the ED of IV Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) in strategic development and operations, by leveraging skills and experience in project management, program leadership, finance support, IT support, strategic thinking, event management and key performance indicators for the I&E Section and Ecosystem.
The I&E Specialist will fulfill strategic and operational duties in existing I&E programs and will also be provide programmatic management, expert knowledge, and guidance to new I&E programs to ensure successful implementation. The I&E Specialist is responsible for coordinating with the IV Comms team to provide contributions from I&E, Innovator Enrichment, NSF I-Corp and IV Events to Innovation Ventures "visibility" mechanisms (including the website, social media, newsletters, multimedia). The I&E Specialist will participate in weekly team I&E team meetings and aid in planning, preparation and follow through items related to these meetings. The I&E Specialist has well-developed professional communication skills and is proficient in written and verbal communication with early career through senior professionals in diverse sectors across the broad innovation ecosystem.

B. The I&E Specialist will fulfill strategic and operational duties in specific Innovator Enrichment programs. This Specialist will provide management to designated programs, effectively transitioning these programs from early phase to a stable, mature and sustainable phase. They will also provide support all Innovator Enrichment programs with advising, guidance and resource coordination as needed.

C. The I&E Specialist will manage the IV Event Services core, supporting IV-hosted events (i.e., symposia, receptions, workshops, challenges/competitions, inter-organizational events). They will provide centralized core scheduling, UCSF event resources, IV visibility asset tracking and will provide guidance to IV event hosts.

D. The I&E Specialist will provide advising, guidance and additional support to Catalyst on an as needed basis, leveraging their extensive experience and skillsets in academic frontline accelerators for health and life sciences.

Looking for highly motivated individuals with strategic and tactical expertise and experience and who are enthusiastic, flexible, interested in learning and growing, good communicators, willing to dive into the scientific and business aspects of projects, as well as performing operational and administrative tasks as needed. Key strengths include the ability to perform well in teams as well as the ability to initiate and execute individually, when appropriate.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $87,900 - $187,700 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum of 3 years of directly related experience
  • Understanding of faculty and programmatic research interests within the University. Understanding of partnership agreements, patent law, licensing and commercialization
  • Strong communication skills including active listening and critical thinking. Highly developed political acumen skills and social perceptiveness. Skilled business development tactics to influence and persuade
  • Ability to work with a diverse group at all levels of the organization including faculty, staff, students and industry partners. Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation
  • Productive in work volume, speed, quality and consistency. Ability to see projects through to completion on deadline and satisfy industry partner and University goals
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in the Microsoft Suite. Effectively uses software applications and learn new ones as required
  • Ability to break down complex concepts and communicate them in an understandable way
