A Brief Overview The Trauma APP facilitates, monitors and provides care to the trauma patient and family; provides consultation and education on trauma issues to individuals and groups internal and external to the hospital. Responsible for the provision of expert care through the continuum from acute inpatient care through to outpatient care. Functions as a clinical expert, consultant, educator and leader within the Trauma Program and interdisciplinary team. Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical standards to enhance the quality of care for the pediatric trauma patient. Ensures that care delivered is family centered, customer focused, effective and cost efficient. Participates in the Trauma Performance Improvement process and as a leader in the maintenance of Pennsylvania Trauma Standards. This is a 0.6 FTE position, with the APP working four12-hour shifts per pay period. The schedule includes working every third weekend (Saturday and Sunday)as part of the team rotation.Flexible shifts vary from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.There are no overnight or holiday shift requirements. Overall Trauma Program The Trauma Team at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is comprised of General Surgery/Trauma Attendings, General Surgery/Trauma Fellows, International General Surgery Fellows, rotating General Surgery Residents, and Trauma APPs. These team members work together to provide care to pediatric patients with traumatic injury ranging from minor head trauma, isolated chest or abdominal injury to severe multi-system injury requiring consultation of several specialty services and life/limb preserving surgery. The Trauma Program admits approximately 1200-1400 injured children each year, with approximately 50% being transferred from surrounding hospitals. Patients range from newborns to older adolescents . Patients with severe or multi-system injury including TBI, severe abdominal/chest injury, multiple orthopedic injury, and disfiguring extremity injuries may require stays spanning several weeks. The most common mechanisms of injury are blunt, including falls, motor vehicle collisions, pedestrian/bike vs auto, in addition to non-accidental trauma. What you will do
- Assesses the complex acute, critical and chronically ill patient for urgent and emergent conditions. Uses relevant data to evaluate for physiologic instability. Utilizes the data to formulate a plan of care.
- Performs therapeutic interventions to stabilize acute and critical health problems. Specific interventions are listed in the Scope of Practice Document and approved as a part of the credentialing/privileging process.
- Analyzes the indications, contraindications, risk of complications and cost-benefits of therapeutic interventions.
- Manages the plan of care through evaluation, modification and documentation according to the patient's response to therapy. Manages changes in condition with a focus on optimizing the patient outcomes.
- Incorporates health promotion, health protection and injury prevention measures into the plan of care within the context of the complex acute, critical and chronic illness.
- Facilitates the patient's transitions between and within health care settings.
- Serves as an educational resource to the patient/family, nursing staff, and provider team. Acts as a consultant to multidisciplinary health care team members.
- Participates in scholarly activities including research and education. Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate educational offerings. Participates in the professional development of others. Acts as a preceptor and mentor to support the development of nurses, nurse practitioners, students, and other health care providers.
- Demonstrates a commitment to patient safety by speaking up about safety issues and changing practice to enhance safety. Shares errors or potential errors through system reporting mechanisms. Demonstrates shared accountability for safe practice.
Education Qualifications
- Master's Degree Nursing - Required

- Bachelor's Degree Physician Assistant - Required
- Master's Degree Physician Assistant - Preferred
