Reporting to the Director of Emergency Services, the Patient Safety Assistant (PSA) supports the nursing staff in the care of behavioral health patients, focusing on maintaining the safety of patients and staff. As a member of the healthcare team, PSAs perform a variety of non-clinical duties to ensure that patients and visitors are provided with services that reflect the hospital's commitment to a safe, secure, and customer-focused environment. Responsibilities include empathic interactions with patients, occasional de-escalation of physically aggressive patients, and ongoing collaboration with security, nursing, and medical staff.

Major Respons

1. Ensures patient safety and prevents patients from inflicting harm to self or others. Provides this service in a nonjudgmental, nondiscriminatory manner that is sensitive to and demonstrates respect for diversity.

2. Performs duties to ensure a safe environment for personal and patient safety.

3. Communicates with the emergency department team members and documents all patient concerns, changes in condition and duties performed.

4. Provides and/or assists patient in the performance of activities of daily living.

5. Provides therapeutic environment for behavioral health patients.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education

Required:

1. High School Graduate or G.E.D.

Preferred:

1. Bachelors in Human Services or equivalent experience preferred.

Experience/Skills

Required:

1. current CPR skills, AED Certification.

2. 1-2 yrs previous experience with behavioral/ mental health patients required.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
