Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Lead Library Utility Worker for Rutgers University Libraries ( RUL). Reporting to the Coordinator of Shipping & Receiving in the Administration and Technology Unit of Rutgers University Libraries ( RUL), the Lead Library Utility Worker ensures the efficient and effective operation of logistics and materials handling across the academic library system.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Oversees and completes the daily delivery and processing of library materials between multiple campus library locations, supervises student assistants.
  • Coordinates the flow of interlibrary loan (ILL) materials, packages, and mail between RUL and shipping partners.
  • Assists in the maintenance of essential tracking systems using UPS Worldship and internal databases, while supporting library access and technical services functions with accuracy and dependability.
  • Makes daily usage of multiple computer systems for communication, scheduling, processing, and the archival of department records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • High school diploma and two (2) years of related experience in a library, mailroom, or logistics role; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.


Certifications/Licenses
  • A valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel Office including Excel, Outlook, Word, and others; comfortable with using shared spreadsheets and databases.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse team.
  • Must pass university defensive driving course.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or some college coursework, academic library experience highly valued.
  • Experience supervising student workers in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with library systems, interlibrary loan workflows, and materials handling procedures.
  • Computer experience with shipment processing software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook email, etc.) and other programs that will assist in gathering statistics, label printing, etc.

Equipment Utilized
  • University issued cargo van, hand trucks, platform trucks, book trucks, and dollies.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must pass university defensive driving course and drive library owned cargo van.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks such as pushing carts, loading bins, and operating hand trucks.
  • Must be able to perform duties outside in all weather conditions.

Special Conditions

  • Some early morning, evening, or weekend work may be required depending on library schedules.
  • Clean Driving Record.
