COORDINATING PLANNER I

CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF AVIATION

Environmental/Planning Section

Number of Positions: 1

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $97,332.00/year

The Chicago Department of Aviation is seeking a Coordinating Planner I to function as a project manager responsible for coordinating airport development and planning projects of a complex nature OR as a senior level, technical expert engaged in researching and managing specialized airport planning initiatives, and performs related duties as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

* Plans and manages the full scope of planning studies including the design, data collection and implementation of recommendations

* Establishes and monitors work objectives and timelines of planning projects and oversees private consultants in the conduct of planning studies

* Participates in and coordinates the collection and analysis of planning data.

* Summarizes and formats collected data and prepares reports for senior management's review.

* Coordinates minor planning activities and projects for airside, terminal, and/or land use planning elements of both MDW and ORD airports.

* Evaluates airport planning projects that affect airport operations assuring compliance with City of Chicago, Federal Aviation Administration, and other federal, state, and local standards and regulations.

* Apply airport planning principles to coordinate stakeholder engagement regarding airfield improvements, operational/capacity improvements, capital planning updates, and/or aviation facility development.

* Assist in the preparation of reports, presentations, and deliverables including illustrations, tables, and drawings to communicate complex technical ideas through a graphical and visual approach for a wide range of airport Stakeholders. Research and analyze trends and best practices related to airport planning.

* Demonstrate strong numeric analytical competence and strategic thinking capability.

* Coordinate documentation, justifications and other pertinent resources that support new airport development and projects.

* Conduct and prepare airspace planning and analysis considering critical navigational surfaces such as: FAR Part 77, Terminal Instrument Approach Procedures (TERPS), One-Engine Inoperative (OEI), obstacle free areas and zones, runway protection zones, runway safety areas and other critical navigational surfaces.

* Conduct and guide various internal and external meetings.

* Draft submittal, letters, and reports as necessary related to planning projects, issues or concerns.

* Respond to inquiries from other departments, agencies, developers, tenants, interest groups, and the general public regarding airport planning issues or related matters.

* Attend various hearings, public meetings, or events that support planning projects and current work.

* Perform other similar duties as directed by the Director of Planning or other Senior Management.

Days: Monday-Friday

Hours: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM

THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree or higher in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Planning, or a directly related field, PLUS five (5) years of work experience in the development and management of major planning or research studies, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position
