Town of Lexington We are currently accepting applications for the following full-time (25hrs/wk) position: Engineering Aide Department of Public Works Anticipated Hourly Range: $29.72 - $33.87 with excellent benefits The REQUIRED Town of Lexington application form must be received in the Town's Human Resource Department. This position is open until filled GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Town Engineer, performs routine engineering related work for environmental, water, sewer, street, and other public works projects and programs. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: * Reviews and processes various applications and requests for permits, licenses, certificates, and hearings that are received by the Engineering Division. Processes Grant of Location petitions. Follows up on approved permits, licenses, and certificates to ensure compliance with terms. * Provides customer service by phone and at the front counter. Provides detailed information, interpretation, materials, and assistance to residents, Town boards and committees, contractors, developers, property owners, vendors, and the general public. * Reviews site plans for Building Division and other Town projects for compliance with engineering standards and regulations. May inspect construction sites to determine conformance of site to design specifications. Prepares, maintains, and files inspection logs and other required records and reports, and may calculate estimates for payment to contractors and street acceptance. * Provides assistance to Engineers and engineering projects as needed and directed. Assists in the preparation and distribution of various contract documents, prepares various reports, and drafts and calculates field notes. May calculate dimensions, profile specifications, and quantities of materials. * Researches records, maps, and other materials as needed to obtain typical engineering data such as location of sewer stubs, water mains, hydrants, etc. and zoning district designations or special property assessments. * Assists in the maintenance of engineering and infrastructure records and in the preparation of sanitary sewer, water, storm drainage, and street system maps, data bases, and comprehensive plans. * Occasionally assists with field work including serving as a member of survey crew or flagging as needed. May assist the survey crew with schedules, calculations, and verifications of field work. * Performs a variety of basic office tasks to support Engineering Division staff, including preparing brochures and presentation materials. * Performs special projects and other related duties as required, directed, or as the situation dictates. * Regular attendance at the workplace is required. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None. MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or equivalent with one to three years of increasingly responsible technical engineering or surveying experience. ADVANCED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Associate's Degree or technical training in engineering, drafting, or a related area. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: * Basic civil engineering principles and engineering design standards. * Drafting techniques, terminology, methods and instruments. * Materials, methods, and techniques of modern construction. * Engineering maps and construction plans and specifications. * Survey principles and practices. * Computer aided design systems and their relationship with GIS. * Modern office procedures, practices, and computer equipment. * Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Ability to: * Understand and interpret engineering plans and specifications. * Perform technical civil engineering plan reviews. * Use algebraic formulas, trigonometry tables, and statistical mathematics. * Effectively operate engineering related tools and perform basic field work. * Operate computer and various software necessary for performing assigned duties. * Maintain accurate engineering records. * Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, and maintain effective working relationships. WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Works offsite during occasional field inspections. Works outside in all weather conditions and is exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. May operate motor vehicle and various engineering related tools. The majority of work is performed in a normal office environment not subject to extremes of noise, temperature, odor, etc. Operates computer, printer, photocopier, drafting tools, engineering calculator, and other office equipment. Work may require extended periods of sitting, reaching, typing, and mousing, which requires eye- hand coordination and finger dexterity.
