Overall Responsibilities: This position requires working closely with team members in the Assistive Technology (AT) program to develop and uphold program standards and to utilize the AT instruction area effectively to create and maintain a focused learning environment. The incumbent will be responsible for instructing clients who are blind or visually impaired, including how to use computers, tablets, and both adaptive and mainstream software, following a structured and comprehensive training plan.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree, preferably in education, rehabilitation, or computer science.
- Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in adaptive technologies for the blind and visually impaired, such as JAWS, NVDA, and ZoomText.
- Working knowledge of Braille preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge of mainstream PC and information technology systems, including Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and File Explorer.
- Experience in troubleshooting mainstream and adaptive systems is recommended.
- Demonstrated competency with current computer and assistive technology as it relates to working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired, including JAWS, ZoomText, typing programs, Microsoft Office, Braille input and output devices, note takers, and adaptive keyboards.
- Working knowledge of virtual platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Office Teams.
- Ability to assist in developing and implementing computer classroom procedures, curriculum, and training methods.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in English, both verbally and in writing, to meet the needs of the clients, the organization, and its customers, including effective listening skills.
- Ability to work with diverse clientele and exercise discretion, confidentiality, and independent judgment.
- Self-directed, requiring minimal supervision.
- Ability to evaluate new assistive technologies as they are developed and make recommendations for their inclusion in the program.
- Ability to assist and make recommendations in developing the annual budget for assistive technology needs.
- Ability to work with and teach on various aspects of smartphones and tablets.
- Ability to assess programs and web pages for accessibility as directed.
- Knowledge of physical and psychosocial adjustments to the loss of vision.
- Ability to problem solve and utilize necessary resources.
- Ability to function independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to organize and manage workload, set priorities, and pay attention to details to ensure tasks are completed accurately and on time.
- Ability to lift/move/transfer and set up computer systems weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, and bend frequently.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide training on computer use and access technology to individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
- Responsible for utilizing the AT instruction area effectively to create and maintain a focused learning environment.
- Develop and implement course curricula for computer applications and software training in conjunction with the AT team.
- Conduct assessments with clients to determine their individual technology needs and the appropriate course of training.
- Make recommendations for equipment and adaptive software upon completion of the initial assessment and in accordance with program guidelines.
- Document the delivery and setup of equipment and the installation of software on all AT related products received by the client.
- Develop and implement individualized plans with the client that focus on their short-term and long-term needs.
- Document the assessment of the client's skills, the instruction provided, and the progress toward goals, while ensuring accurate maintenance of client files.
- Complete all documentation for reporting and billing in a timely manner as directed by your supervisor and in accordance with program guidelines.
- Collaborate as a technical resource/liaison to individuals receiving services regarding assistive technology products, equipment installation, and/or product configuration.
- Install, program, and troubleshoot acquired products, working with Bosma's IT department as appropriate.
- Establish working relationships with access technology vendors and manufacturers to maintain proficiency with up-to-date products.
- Demonstrate assistive technology and educational software as needed.
- Make budget recommendations and proposals for annual budgeting for assistive technology needs.
- Stay current in the field through conferences and workshops and provide training to other professionals as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
