Director of US Site Operations

The Director of US Site Operations within the Research Technology organization leads a diverse team to optimize scientific research operations, driving efficiency in laboratory activities in support of drug discovery. This role partners with site leadership to ensure effective site operations, safety, and governance, while overseeing business processes, laboratory services, facilities projects, and capital investments. Responsibilities include budget and resource management, process improvement, collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The Director also provides strategic oversight and guidance to staff, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and industry best practices. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in scientific operations, project management, and a deep understanding of drug discovery processes.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

  • Lead a diverse site-based team with varied experience to achieve aligned objectives
  • Key Leadership role at R&D Site, in partnership with R&D Site Leader, to drive accountability at UP for safety, site operations effectiveness, site objectives and governance, and scientific engagement.
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize the operational efficiency of lab focused scientific research activities in support of Drug Discovery at UP.
  • Lead cross-functional teams and collaborate with senior leaders at UP to define and streamline business processes, ensuring alignment with organizational and site goals and objectives.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and coordination of site-based laboratory services and activities, ensuring adherence to timelines, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Use site-based knowledge to successful apply global transformational strategies and deliver site specific phases of a global program in an efficient and effective way for UP scientists and leaders.
  • Provide oversight, on behalf of R&D, for customer funded facilities projects and initiatives delivered by partner organizations
  • Support the delivery of R&D capital investments at UP, including facilities, infrastructure, technology, and equipment
  • Oversee the site governance model required to support business as usual operations, accommodate site impacts and change, and promote efficient and effective decision making
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and mitigate risks in scientific operations.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and operational excellence within the Research Technology organization.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify and address operational challenges, providing solutions and recommendations.
  • Oversee budgets, resources, and timelines for scientific operations projects and initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with external vendors and partners to ensure the availability of necessary resources and services.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to a team of scientists, technicians, and operational staff, promoting professional development and growth.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in scientific operations and drug discovery.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors or equivalent degree in a scientific or engineering discipline, preferably in the field of drug discovery or a related area.
  • 12+ years experience in scientific operations, project management, or a similar role within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Previous experience in laboratory operations leadership positions, Director or equivalent
  • Previous experience managing external vendors and partners

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of drug discovery processes and laboratory operations, including familiarity with relevant technologies and equipment.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and managing complex scientific projects and operations.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and quality standards relevant to laboratory operations in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Proficiency in project management methodologies and tools.
  • Ability to adapt and lead in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, managing changing priorities and deadlines.
