The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at CMU is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative ways to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join an interdisciplinary project at the cutting edge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Anthropology. This position will work closely with faculty in AI, NLP, Ethics, and Anthropology to design and conduct empirical studies, develop novel evaluation frameworks, and advance methods that ensure AI systems are culturally sensitive, socially aligned, and ethically grounded.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Conduct interdisciplinary research at the intersection of language technologies and cultural analysis
  • Design and implement evaluations of AI systems across diverse cultural contexts
  • Collaborate with computer scientists and anthropologists to develop new methods for pluralistic alignment
  • Publish high-impact research in top venues in NLP, AI, and social science
  • Help organize workshops or symposia to foster interdisciplinary dialogue

Qualifications:
  • PhD in Anthropology, Computer Science, Linguistics, Science & Technology Studies, or a related field
  • Strong publication record or demonstrated potential for impactful research
  • Technical skills (e.g., Python, NLP toolkits) are a plus but not required if the candidate brings qualitative or conceptual expertise
  • A combination of education and meaningful experience from which comparable knowledge is proven may be considered.
