About the Job

Career Services Administration accepts resumes for teaching positions that may open up during the academic year.

Applications are reviewed as openings occur, and individual applicants are invited to interview when their skills or areas of expertise match a specific opening. These are temporary, non-tenured, Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) positions as Teaching Specialists, paid on a per course basis. Typically, these appointments are made semester by semester and employment is contingent on the course meeting its enrollment target. This posting is designed to establish a pool of instructors. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year. Applications will not be individually acknowledged but will be reviewed when such openings occur throughout the academic year.

Job Responsibilities

Teaching/Instruction (90%)

  • Teach one section of OUE 1830 - Developing Cultural Intelligence and Career Readiness in Your Internship Experience , for up to 35 undergraduate students occurring on Tuesdays via Zoom in Fall Semester 2025 from 5:30pm-6:20pm, Spring 2026 dates are TBD.
  • Basic class preparation and updates to Canvas, including instructor contact information.
  • Based on lesson plans and presentations from the course coordinator, present basic career development content and facilitate discussion on topics such as applying and interviewing for internships and jobs, networking online and in-person, workplace culture and communication, values as it relates to careers and cultures, to name a few examples
  • Grade student materials with written feedback and/or assessment of points with a rubric, including quizzes, short written reflections, mini-presentations (slides or video recordings) within 2 weeks.
  • Hold office hours and/or available time for students to ask questions.
  • Hold periodic time to check-in with the co-instructor, and respond to timely communication with the co-instructor.
  • Submit grades.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Student Advising (10%)

  • Respond to student inquiries via email, phone, or in person.
  • Evaluate student performance.

OUE 1830 Developing Cultural Intelligence and Career Readiness in Your Internship Experience

OUE 1830 is an internship course, for 1 credit, designed to meet the needs of undergraduate international students utilizing Curricular Practical Training (CPT) work authorization. This course welcomes any undergraduate students completing or reflecting on an internship experience to process their professional learning experiences. Through live weekly class sessions, written reflections, group discussions, and presentations, international students will learn, practice, and refine career skills for success in an internship and ongoing career management. This course will offer students an increased understanding of concepts of career readiness and Cultural Intelligence, applications of these concepts in the workplace and in students' own development. UMN International Students who are engaging in, or reflecting on an internship will have increased preparedness for success in their global career experience following this course. Students who complete this course will confidently reflect on their career skill development learnings from an internship experience, and their ability to make supportive career connections in professional environments

Logistics

  • Time Commitment: Up to 5 hours/week for duration of course, including prep, class facilitation, grading, student communication. Required attendance at Adjunct Instructor training held at the start of each term and debrief reflection meetings held at the end of each term.
  • Anticipated Start and End Dates: Appointment will coincide with semester(s) of instruction, including time for prep and grading after final exams.
  • Anticipated courses per year: Classes taught per year will vary depending on sections available each semester.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • A Master's degree is normally required for an appointment as a Teaching Specialist. The appointee is not required to have the same credentials expected of faculty but must have demonstrated competence to teach the course material related to studies in higher education, student development, career counseling/coaching, international education. Professional and/or teaching experience related to assigned instructional responsibilities may be required
  • Familiarity with the international student experience in US Higher Education, and UMN resources to support their academic and career journeys. In particular a basic understanding of international student work authorization (CPT & OPT) and awareness of employment visas (H-1B) is expected.
  • Ability to deliver content in ways that effectively account for a variety of diverse backgrounds, communities, identities, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of teaching in a college or community college setting.
  • Experience teaching or coaching career development concepts related to applying and preparing for internships and jobs, and building professional connections with platforms such as LinkedIn.
  • Lived or developed global experience, such as speaking multiple languages, living or traveling internationally, professional work in a cross-cultural team or setting.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $3,000 stipend; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
