Job Summary

The Senior Staff Accountant is a member of the Tax department with key responsibilities in preparing support for tax filings, reviewing tax filings, projections, and planning initiatives.This role collaborates with internal teams and external advisors to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations. The ideal candidate brings strong technical tax knowledge, attention to detail, and a proactive, team-oriented mindset. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex tax matters within a dynamic real estate environment.

This is a hybrid position with a combination of remote work and on-site presence at our corporate office in the Sorrento Valley area of San Diego, CA. Candidates must reside within commuting distance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the tax managers in providing information to accounting firms, governmental agencies and other intercompany departments for purposes of preparing tax returns or responding to audits.

  • Assist with sales & use tax audits and filing of sales & use tax returns.

  • Assist in the review and/or prepare quarterly and annual tax projections.

  • Tax planning including researching issues and coordinating with internal department heads and external tax advisors.

  • Completes company required training by established deadline.

  • Complies with all Fairfield standards, applicable health and safety rules and regulations, as well as applicable local, state and federal laws.

  • Any other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) in Accounting or Tax required

  • CPA certification preferred (active or in progress)

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting

  • Hands-on experience with federal, state, and local tax compliance and reporting

  • Strong understanding of U.S. tax code and pass-through tax regulations

  • Experience collaborating with external auditors, tax advisors, and internal stakeholders

  • Exposure to real estate industry tax structures and compliance preferred

  • Some Experience preparing and reviewing quarterly and annual tax provisions and projections is preferred

  • Experience working for a Big 4 accounting firm (Deloitte, PwC, EY, or KPMG) is preferred

  • Familiarity with tax software is preferred

Skills & Competencies

  • Working knowledge of limited partnerships, limited liability companies, and passthrough tax reporting requirements.

  • Working knowledge of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Taxable REIT Subsidiaries is desirable.

  • Foreign withholding experience is helpful but not required.

  • Working knowledge of FAS/Sage depreciation is a plus.

  • Demonstrated and effective oral and written communication skills. Must be capable of dealing with executives, peers, outside advisors, joint venture partners and others throughout the organization.

  • Strong computer skills (including Microsoft Office Excel) are required. Apply technology as part of enhanced process management capabilities.

  • As a member of a small team, a roll-up-your-sleeves work ethic is necessary and required.

  • Must have strong organizational skills, problem-solving skills and be goal oriented.

  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining high quality and a focus on detail.

Estimated Rate of Pay:

$95,000.00 - $105,000.00

This position is exempt; the range above reflects annual salary.

The pay range displayed for this position is determined by skills and experience required, location and job complexity*. Potential job offers may vary based on the skills, education, and experience an individual candidate holds. This range reflects base rate only, and does not include allowances, perks, commissions or bonuses applicable to this position (if any). In addition to base salary, Fairfield offers all full time associates the following, upon meeting eligibility requirements:

* Pay range is a calculation based on a midpoint price. Fairfield complies with all wage and hour laws, including minimum wage and salary exempt requirements.
