Special Note
This is a full-time, overtime eligible position working on the day shift in Building Services on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College.
Position Purpose
Perform custodial duties to maintain the cleanliness and care of the institution facilities.
Nature and Scope
This position reports to the Custodian 4 and under direct supervision, carries out various cleaning duties wherever assigned.
Essential Functions

  • Vacuum furniture and carpets.
  • Thoroughly clean and disinfect restrooms.
  • Dust mop and wet mop tile, brick, and vinyl floors.
  • Clean offices, classrooms, hallways, and lobbies.
  • Sweep interior and exterior steps under all covered areas and entries.
  • Clean windows and mirrors.
  • Pick up designated trash collection in all buildings and keep collection containers clean and odorless.
  • Wash walls as needed in restrooms, collection areas, classrooms, and other areas of obvious dirt or graffiti.
  • Shampoo and spot clean carpets and furniture.
  • Auto-scrub hallways, lobbies, classrooms, and all other open areas as required.
  • Strip and/or scrub, seal, wax, and buff tile, brick, and vinyl floors.
  • Maintain S.M.A.R.T. collection stations in assigned areas.
  • Clean custodial tools and equipment and return to storage areas when finished.
  • Keep custodial rooms clean, organized, and properly stocked.
  • Set up and take down chairs, tables, staging, and other necessary items for special events and functions as required.
  • Assist in supporting Graduation and other institutional events as they occur.
  • Clean locker rooms and swimming pool areas as assigned.
  • Clean loading docks and balconies.
  • Perform custodial area duties and comply with Building Services policies and expectations as well as those of the College.
  • Move furniture and office equipment when required.
  • Assist Building Services Manager and shift supervisors as needed.
  • May be designated as required personnel during suspended operations.
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Skill and ability to perform the tasks described in the essential functions, including the ability to use the necessary tools.
  • Ability to follow safety rules, regulations, and instructions.
  • Ability and willingness to work assigned shift and follow established procedures for requesting and using leave.
  • Ability to understand written and verbal instructions and carry them out correctly.
  • Duties common to custodial work require physical strength, agility, and endurance to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, bend, reach, lift, and pull/push objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals, dust, and other environmental conditions is expected in custodial work.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
