Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The principal function of the Director for Project Management is to assist the Associate Vice Chancellor of Facilities in the planning, design, management, and execution of informal projects. Responsibilities routinely include design, bidding, and supervision of contracts between the University, Architectural/Engineering firms, and contractors. The position is responsible for ensuring that the inspection and quality assurance aspects of assigned projects are accomplished and that every project is in compliance with building codes and University standards. The Director is responsible for the coordination of the budgeting, planning, and execution of all informal construction projects for UNCW and ensures that the assigned projects are completed within specified time and budget constraints. The Director acts on behalf of the Associate Vice Chancellor on matters related to informal projects, advises on campus-wide repair and renovation needs, and suggests training opportunities for staff.

This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • A relevant post-baccalaureate degree (architecture, engineering, planning, facilities, or related field) with a minimum of 3 years of related professional experience. A relevant undergraduate degree with 5-7 years of professional experience will be considered on an exceptional basis.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in managerial position with thorough knowledge of principles and practices of planning, project management, building materials and current methods and techniques used in building construction and renovations in a university, governmental or large corporation setting.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Ability to facilitate the design, interpret, and review plans & specifications of outside consultants to see that they meet the program requirements, are in compliance with building codes, and follow the University's Design and Construction Guidelines.
  • Ability to conceptually conceive design solutions, accurately estimate construction costs, manage the project schedule, coordinate projects, and to technically direct others and review and evaluate their work.
  • Experience with the NC State Construction Office, Department of Labor, NCDEQ, Department of Insurance, NC Building Code and related agencies, NFPA Code.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the Office of Facilities is to provide the full complement of services necessary to maintain the facilities and systems of the university in accordance with the long-term strategic plans of the university. We are charged to maintain the aesthetically pleasing Georgian appearance of the core campus and manage the support of all university property through our departments of Architectural & Construction Services, Facilities Administration, Physical Plant , Utilities and Engineering, and Project Management. The UNCW Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs, the Chancellor, and the Board of Trustees, along with the laws and regulations of the University of North Carolina and State of North Carolina, govern the Office of Facilities.
The Project Management Department supports the University mission by providing the highest quality and most cost-effective services to facilitate required repairs, renovations, and new construction projects as well as related studies and surveys. These services are available to all university divisions to assist them in meeting stated goals and objectives, and to advance the University's vision of the Strategic and Master Plans. The department provides overall planning, design, and construction management of both new and renovation projects defined as "Informal" (projects up to $500,000) for the university. Through assessment of existing facilities and direction from senior administrative officers, this department manages the budgeting, design, bidding, and construction of the assigned projects.
