Overview The Protection and Controls Engineering department within the Central Engineering organization is looking for a highly motivated Engineer to join the Protection Support and Analysis section. We seek a candidate who is committed to excellence and understands the importance of personal accountability in making sound business decisions. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, technical competence, and the ability to manage multiple assignments with changing priorities.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- The Engineer will be assigned to provide protection related support to Operation, analyze relay protection systems, including tele protection channels, and (if applicable) provide corrective action plans after system events.
- Perform short circuit calculations and relay coordination studies to ensure system reliability and safety.
- Develop descriptive documentation for relay protection systems to support operating personnel.
- Communicate proactively with the supervisor regarding actual or anticipated issues related to assigned tasks.
- Be available on a periodic 24-hour basis to consult with operating teams regarding relay protection system issues.
- Conceive, plan, and design solutions or alternatives for new or refurbishment projects, including conducting technical and economic evaluations, preparing specifications, and performing feasibility studies.
- Perform independent evaluations of system equipment replacement and new project justification using engineering economics, while also providing expert guidance and support during emergencies involving relay protection systems to ensure timely resolution.
- Assist users with ESR initiation, review and following.
- Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and 3 years of engineering work experience in any of the following areas: relay protection, power systems engineering or operations.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering
Relevant Work Experience
- Three to five years of professional experience, with a proven ability to deliver exceptional customer service - Required
- Possess strong technical competence, organizational skills, and attention to detail - Required
- Flexibility to manage multiple assignments with shifting priorities and deadlines - Required
- Proven analytical abilities - Required

- Protection experience, such as in setting relays, performing coordination, fault studies, developing logic, or using related software - Preferred
- Familiarity with NERC Reliability Standards (such as PRC-002, 004, 006 etc.), preferred.

Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be available for travel both regionally and continent-wide, to attend conferences, meetings, etc. as needed.
- Selected candidate must be capable of working in various indoor and outdoor conditions.
- Must be able to walk/climb/stand extensively.
- Must be able to work in power plants and high voltage substations and wear the required PPE as needed.
