Assistant Superintendent - Fabrication
Purpose:
Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking an Assistant Superintendent to support fabrication operations at our site Norfolk, VA.
The Assistant Superintendent assists the Superintendent in overseeing key aspects of the project's progress within Fabrication Programs, which includes fabrication of Navy and Commercial assets. This role supports the determination of personnel, material, equipment, and software needed, assists in establishing basic priorities and work sequences, and helps maintain a balanced workload among subordinates through proper distribution of work projects and allotment of manpower, equipment, and materials.
The position is located onsite in Norfolk VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production/operations. Position may require occasional travel.
Job Description:


  • Supports the Superintendents in the construction of projects as assigned, management of software, submittals, and any other documentation requirements.
  • Assists in the oversight of shop-based fabrication and repair projects; this includes supporting the development of budgets and schedules, contractor selection, contract management, and interfacing with regulatory agencies.
  • Assists in the development and adherence of maintenance and repair budgets, as well as controls expenditures within limitations of a designated project's budget.
  • May prepare and present status reports to customers, project team, and management, often in collaboration with the Superintendent.
  • Supports the Superintendent in supervising the timely and cost-effective maintenance, repair, modification, and refurbishment projects of various fabricated components and equipment.
  • Monitors contractors during projects and reports progress and issues to the Superintendent.
  • Exercises independent decision-making authority within established guidelines set by the Superintendent or management.
  • Assists with the overall responsibility for schedule adherence.
  • Works closely with Supervision and ensures they understand their areas of responsibility within the fabrication shop, escalating concerns to the Superintendent as needed.
  • Responsible for collection of physical progress each week for their jobs, and reporting this to the Superintendent.
  • Works closely with representatives from various classification societies and governing agencies, as applicable for fabricated products, under the Superintendent's guidance.
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment - hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes.
  • Works independently to complete assigned responsibilities, escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.


Qualifications:


  • Must have at least four (4) years' experience in new construction or heavy industrial repair environment in a management-type capacity, supporting multi-trade crews on commercial and/or naval components.
  • Knowledge of fabrication processes, including various types of construction, and repair processes for large components.
  • Experience in a fabrication shop environment, specifically with large-scale builds and one-off projects, is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to act as a spokesperson.
  • Experience with Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Strong planning and project management skills, with a clear understanding of contract value and current costs.
  • Improvement and achievement oriented, with strong attention to detail and documentation skills.


Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
