Job Summary
The Plant Science Research Center of Auburn University is seeking candidates for the position of Research Assistant/Associate. The individual selected for this position will provide professional level research assistance in plant culture and growth.

The primary purpose of the Plant Science Research Center ( PSRC) is to provide greenhouse space and supporting facilities and services to research scientists of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station ( AAES). The PSRC is dedicated to assisting scientists to meet the challenges that face Alabama agriculture presently and in the future.

Essential Functions
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Collaborate with associate director to manage installation and production of research and/or teaching projects; monitor research materials for plant health, pests, fertility, proper cultural conditions and watering requirements for row crops, small fruit, vegetable, forage and tree research projects. Records important data throughout experiments.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of IPM, biological control and pesticide use programs to control pest and weeds in the greenhouse and nursery areas. Scout crops for pest, disease and weed pressure, make spray recommendations; perform pesticide calculations, apply pest/weed control and/or advise sprayer operator.
  • Provide supervision, training and direction for student workers and subordinates in the support and care of research materials.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance of structures, control systems, grounds, and any new construction; repair equipment used in work (Tractors, lawn equipment, sprayers, etc.)
  • Assist with the operation, scheduling, maintenance and programming of lab equipment such as soil mixers, growth chambers, autoclave, balances etc.
  • Operates various pieces of farm machinery including tractors, sprayers and forklift.
  • Plans, budgets and procures supplies and other items needed for daily operations.
  • Help prepare for field days, extension, and community activities; work with Associate Director to manage logistics to conduct workshops and plant sales.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Level I: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Horticulture, Agronomy and Soils, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Forestry, or related field; no experience required.

Level II: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Horticulture, Agronomy and Soils, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Forestry, or related field and 2 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.

Level III: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Horticulture, Agronomy and Soils, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Forestry, or related field and 4 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

Level I:Master's degree from an accredited institution in Horticulture, Agronomy and Soils, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Forestry, or related field; no experience required.

Level II:Master's degree from an accredited institution in Horticulture, Agronomy and Soils, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Forestry, or related field and 2 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.

*Substitutions allowed for experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

  • Supervisory experience
  • Certified Pesticide Applicator License (D&R Preferred) or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment
  • Experience with data collection, analysis, and presentation of results
  • Experience working in a greenhouse or nursery setting
