The Opportunity

As the Principal Inventory Control Manager, you will oversee the accuracy and efficiency of inventory processes for a pharmaceutical distribution operation, ensuring optimal stock levels, compliance with regulations, and effective material flow. Based at our main US Distribution facility in Louisville, Kentucky, this role is essential in our overall mission to ensure our customer and patients needs are fulfilled. Reporting directly to the Head of Business Excellence, you will drive the development and implementation of inventory management strategies, including monitoring stock levels, conducting audits, analyzing data, and leading cross-functional teams to achieve inventory accuracy and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Inventory Management:

  • Develop and implement inventory management strategies by creating and refining processes for receiving, storing, and distributing pharmaceuticals, aligning with organizational goals.

  • Influence cross-functional teams to adopt accurate inventory practices and maintain compliance with inventory control policies.

  • Monitor stock levels in real-time, identifying and collaborating with teams to resolve potential shortages or overages to prevent availability issues and reduce waste.

  • Conduct regular audits, cycle counts, and physical inventory counts to reconcile physical inventory with records and maintain accuracy.

  • Analyze inventory data to identify trends, improve inventory management, and optimize workflows.

  • Ensure proper storage conditions and space utilization to minimize waste and maximize efficiency, in collaboration with warehousing teams.

  • Effectively manage key inventory strategies across multiple distribution centers including 3PL partners

Compliance and Regulatory:

  • Ensure adherence to all relevant pharmaceutical regulations, safety guidelines, financial reporting (applicable ICRF standards) and company policies related to inventory control.

  • Partner with compliance and quality teams to maintain adherence to cGMP, FDA guidelines, and other applicable regulations for pharmaceutical storage, handling, and distribution.

  • Collaborate with appropriate teams to oversee the destruction of expired or unusable medications, ensuring all regulatory requirements are met.

  • Ensure documentation and record-keeping practices meet regulatory and audit readiness standards.

Collaboration and Process Influence:

  • Serve as an inventory subject matter expert, providing guidance to teams on accurate inventory practices, compliance standards, and inventory control procedures.

  • Advocate for cross-functional alignment by working with commercial, sales and planning, channel inventory management, production, quality assurance, and warehousing teams to ensure accurate forecasting and efficient operations.

  • Promote continuous improvement by identifying and recommending solutions to optimize inventory practices.

  • Influence teams to align their processes with inventory strategies and ensure compliance with company goals and objectives.

  • Lead and support quality deviation processes as needed

  • Effectively support daily distribution scheduling and planning to ensure accuracy to delivery commitments.

Reporting and Analysis:

  • Generate and maintain detailed inventory reports to provide insights into inventory levels, turnover, and other key performance indicators.

  • Analyze inventory data to identify trends, discrepancies, and areas for improvement, and communicate recommendations to stakeholders.

  • Investigate inventory discrepancies by determining root causes and collaborating with teams to implement corrective actions.

  • Deliver regular performance metrics and data insights to stakeholders to support data-driven decision-making.

Process Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement in inventory control procedures to increase efficiency and mitigate errors.

  • Collaborate with warehouse and operational teams to optimize warehouse management systems to enhance workflows and achieve operational excellence.

Who You Are

Educational Background:

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field required.

  • Advanced degrees (Master's, PhD) in the same fields strongly preferred, with demonstrated expertise in pharmaceutical inventory management.

Previous Experience:

  • Over 7 years of experience in inventory management or supply chain operations, with a minimum of 5 years in pharmaceutical distribution.

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry or a cGMP environment is preferred, highlighting the specific regulatory demands of the field.

  • Certifications such as CPIM, CSCP, or CLTD are a plus, indicating specialized knowledge in inventory and supply chain management.

  • ERP system experience (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite) is essential for handling complex data and integrating with other business functions.

Technical Knowledge / Skills / Competencies:

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions.

  • Proficiency in data analysis tools like Excel, SQL, or Business Intelligence (BI) software (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).

  • Experience with inventory management software and tools for tracking, analysis, auditing, and reporting, including automated batch tracking and barcode/RFID technology.

  • Knowledge of demand forecasting methods and inventory optimization techniques (e.g., Lean Inventory, ABC analysis, FEFO) to reduce waste and ensure product availability.

  • Understanding of supply chain logistics and distribution processes to ensure efficient flow of good

  • Ability to ensure compliance with recordkeeping regulations and maintain accurate documentation for audits.

  • Knowledge of safe storage conditions for different types of pharmaceutical products, including temperature-sensitive items, to ensure product integrity and efficacy.

  • Experience implementing and maintaining policies and procedures related to inventory control and regulatory requirements.

Relocation funding is not available for this role.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Louisville, Kentucky is $88,200 - $163,900. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
