Job Summary

As part of the Special Collections Management (SCM) department at the Getty Research Institute (GRI), and under the direction of the Project Manager Specialist, the limited-term Project Manager will develop and implement projects in support of the preservation and public access of the acclaimed Johnson Publishing Company (JPC) Archive. Co-owned with Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), the JPC Archive is one of the most significant collections relating to 20th-century Black America. Containing over 4 million photographs, 5,000 magazines, 10,000 audio and visual recordings, and 200 boxes of business records, this vast resource will be a foundation for research, training, publications, interpretive programming, and digital access projects.

The Project Manager will work with colleagues from the GRI, other Getty programs and departments including Getty Digital, Smithsonian National Museum of African American Heritage and Culture (NMAAHC), and Smithsonian Office of Digital Transformation (ODT) on a project that encompasses five components: archival processing, conservation, digitization, metadata enhancement and digital preservation and access. The Project Manager will liaise with teams in three locations to monitor project timelines, scheduling and leading cross-departmental meetings, managing project documentation, submitting procurement requisitions, preparing reports and communicating with internal and external stakeholders. The Project Manager will contribute to the planning and implementation of the JPC Archive website and related programming and events. In addition, as a full-time contributor to the JPC Archive, the successful candidate will also be asked to contribute to and/or support the metadata development, research and public presentation components of this initiative.
