Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a Staff Accountant to perform a variety of accounting duties, requiring a solid understanding of accounting principles, accuracy in compiling and analyzing data, and the ability to generate clear financial reports. Responsibilities include preparing balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting documentation for transactions recorded in the Institution's general ledger and job ledger. The role applies internal policies and relevant external regulations to ensure transactions are recorded accurately and in compliance with GAAP. This is a hybrid role, requiring 2-3 days on Campus.

Job Description

Essential Functions & Duties
  • Prepare and maintain assigned balance sheet and SOP reconciliations with appropriate supporting documentation.

  • Prepare journal entries as needed for accurate and timely recording of financial transactions.

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statement packages and support the month-end close process.

  • Record and reconcile monthly transactions related to retirement plans.

  • Provide support for the annual financial statement audit and the preparation of the annual IRS Form 990.

  • Utilize accounting software, ERP systems, and other IT tools to perform duties efficiently and accurately.

  • Assist in ERP implementation projects, including data review, transfer, and reconciliation between legacy and new systems.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Institution to ensure the integrity and completeness of financial data.

  • Participate in cross-training to support the Finance & Accounting department.

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field.
  • 2+ years of professional accounting experience, including GL and reconciliations.
  • Proven experience supporting monthly financial statements and month/year-end close processes.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including v-lookups and pivot tables).
  • Demonstrated cross-functional communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Experience in a nonprofit, research, or higher education environment.
  • CPA or CPA candidacy.
  • Experience with Workday (or similar large-scale ERP systems).
