Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Brody School of Medicine Office of Medical Education ( OME) is strongly committed to excellence in all aspects of the physician training process. We work closely with our basic science and clinical departments as well as with all administrative units within the medical school to maximize the achievement of our students, and to support our teaching faculty in delivering a curriculum that emphasizes the science and art of medicine. OME is committed to working collectively with the faculty and administration to maintain a learning environment that values every student and facilitates the achievement of their educational goals, including their ability to lead and serve in communities across North Carolina. OME supports the teaching faculty and others in the process of providing an accredited program of undergraduate medical education leading to the MD degree and OME provides leadership in curriculum development, program evaluation, student assessment and medical education research and scholarship.
Job Duties
This is an "Internal Posting" open only to applicants who are currently permanent BSOM faculty of East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine. The position will be a part-time (up to .50 FTE/up to 50%) reassignment of time for a Brody School of Medicine faculty member.

The Assistant Dean of Assessment, Evaluation, and Continuous Quality Improvement will report to the Associate Dean of Medical Education and provide oversight of all aspects of assessment within the Brody School of Medicine, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement of the undergraduate medical education program leading to the MD degree. They will serve as a leader and a resource in programmatic accreditation requirements, the criteria for assessing student learning outcomes, and identification of assessment strategies and instruments, including the utilization of results, to improve academic programs across the SOM. The Assistant Dean of Assessment, Evaluation, and Continuous Quality Improvement will also serve as a resource and collaborator in fostering scholarship with the faculty of the medical school. The Assistant Dean of Assessment, Evaluation, and Continuous Quality Improvement will provide the faculty with skill-building seminars/workshops to support best practices in learner assessment and programmatic metrics.

Job Duties:
Curricular Monitoring:


  • Helps develop, implement, and monitor measurable learning outcomes for the curriculum that align with and serve the mission of the medical school.
  • Leads efforts in curricular mapping within the SOM.
  • Working collaboratively with all stakeholders in Academic Affairs, leads efforts in overall program evaluation for the SOM.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in current assessment practices and research methods.


Assessment and Evaluation Design, Improvement, and Implementation:


  • Supports the assessment and evaluation instrument development process, including development of tests, surveys, observation protocols, interview focus group questionnaires, scoring rubrics and simulation activities.
  • Leads the selection of research designs, interpretation, and analysis of data related to assessment and evaluation.
  • Provides data for and participates in the creation of assessment accreditation reports for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and other accrediting agencies.
  • Works collaboratively and closely with the Data Analysis and Quality Improvement staff to provide assessment and evaluation data required for continuous quality improvement efforts within the SOM.
  • Develops processes, policies, and procedures as necessary to ensure compliance and that standards are exceeding national accreditation requirements in all aspects of assessment and evaluation.
  • Ensures all policies related to assessment and evaluation are up to date.

Leadership and Faculty Development:

  • Supports and mentors the career development of staff.
  • Maintains and improves competence in disciplinary content and methodologies through participation in faculty development activities and self-directed learning.
  • Participates in scholarly activities, which may include the advancement of new theories, practices and principles, expansion and interpretation of existing ideas, theories, and principles, and improvement and application of knowledge, especially in new settings. Submits scholarly work for open dissemination and professional peer review.
  • Participates in committees and other administrative duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Brody School of Medicine faculty member.


  • Advanced degree, i.e., MD, DO, EdD, Ph.D., or JD from an appropriately accredited institution or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification is required.
  • At least five years of experience in assessment and evaluation.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
If MD or DO -

  • Full, unencumbered license to practice medicine in North Carolina
  • Full schedule DEA Registration Certificate
  • Credentialing with ECU Physicians

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Strong background and experience in medical education and medical education assessment and evaluation.
  • Ability to develop and implement new programs.
  • Knowledge of creating and managing budgets.
  • Purpose-driven leader.

License or Certification Required by the Department
