The WVU Cancer Institute at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Multimedia Specialist with Cancer Prevention & Control. About the Opportunity This position will manage print and digital graphic design, video, branding, accessibility, and evidence-based messaging projects in support of the Communicating for Health in Appalachia by Translating Science (CHATS) core at the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control, within the WVU School of Medicine at the WVU Cancer Institute. The position will apply multimedia skills to health communication projects and translate research data for a variety of audiences. Duties include, but are not limited to, photography, videography, and audio recordings and their editing; the creation of infographics, cancer awareness toolkits, community resources, training videos, podcasts, and presentations. Serve as the creative arm for the CHATS Core and work closely with the team to develop original education curriculum assets, community education materials, faculty presentations, other needs based on client requests. The position will serve as brand manager for the CHATS Lab and Core. They will develop and maintain brand and voice for the CHATS Lab and Core, create promotional digital and print assets, including video. The Communicating for Health in Appalachia by Translating Science (CHATS) Core provides specialized health communication services that translate research into practice. We blend complementary expertise in communication science and health behavior theory (CHATS Lab) with knowledge translation and dissemination science (CHATS Core) to transform scientific evidence into actionable communication interventions targeted to diverse real-world settings. The CHATS Core consults with internal and external partners providing; (1) Dissemination planning, (2) Communication material development, and (3) Customized training presentations and workshops. What You'll Do
- Participate in client meetings to identify and prioritize project ideas and strategic goals.
- Serve as the lead creative designer or as part of the creative services team to plan and execute print and digital media projects, including, print pieces, video and digital assets, and other mission-critical, media-intensive projects.
- Provide relevant and meaningful conceptual design ideas and examples for projects to clients based on prior consultations.
- Design artwork and digital artifacts for the CHATS Core and its clients including social media content, video assets, print and digital pieces.
- Use and enhance photographs and digital media imagery as design elements to create high visual impact and produce artistic elements for print and digital platforms, including video.
- When applicable, meet with printers and other vendors to discuss details and problems that may occur and to plan project production.
- Develop infographics and interpret scientific data to visual elements for a variety of audiences.
- Develop visual elements for training curriculum, including graphic design and video assets.
- Analyze printing needs and recommend cost-saving methods.
- Estimate time(s) for performing the production functions of each project, prepares comprehensive specifications of projects for bidding purposes for editor and supervisor to complete production estimates.
- Regularly review literature and recent developments in the field of design and technology.
- Maintain current knowledge of content design, development, software, hardware, accessibility standards, compliance standards, guidelines, licensing and copyright compliance, and best practices.
- Work cooperatively as a member of the Department of Cancer Prevention & Control, assisting faculty and staff of differing backgrounds and expertise to support a diverse and often dispersed clientele.
- Inform professionals and others as needed about print and digital media design issues, current trends and best practices for improving their own products, how to effectively use hardware and software, as well as various proprietary and open-source programs.
- Educate and train faculty, staff, and clients the importance of building accessible templates for digital use with styled hierarchy and how to use them correctly.
- Mentor students, interns, and volunteers as needed and required.
- Contribute to the dissemination of findings and projects associated with the CHATS Lab
- May Contribute to articles, abstracts, and posters to promote programmatic work and outreach of CPC.
- Functions as a member of the CPC staff and participates in staff meetings, required conferences, training seminars, program meetings, regular team meetings, etc. Includes conferences and training seminars provided by the WVUCI, Mountains of Hope (MOH) Cancer Coalition, and other relevant entities.
- Function as a member of Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC). Assists with other CPC program activities as requested by Senior Staff members.
- Participates in and contributes to the mission and vision of WVU Cancer Institute (WVUCI) and the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC).
- Identification and implementation of a third-party media source (such as Envato, iStock, etc.)
Accessibility
- Create and assist in making accessible document that meet University compliance standards, this includes but not limited to: correctly styling and structuring of documents, tagging, attaching alternative text descriptions, hyperlinks, and threading documents within InDesign software to ensure proper reading order.
- Help build, maintain and manage accessible Word document templates for use online to ensure they include clean styles, properly tagged links, images with alternative text anchored, and tables with established headings. Supports and trains others who use the templates
- Work within Word and InDesign documents to ensure styles are encoded with the proper hierarchies and structure needed to meet document accessibility and conducts thorough clearing out of additional code or irrelevant styles.
- Import styles from clean accessible Word documents into InDesign to ensure that all styles were correctly imported or reattach proper style.
- Ensure all document titles, authors, keywords, and language details are included during exports. Review settings and export options to ensure exports are done properly.
This Is a hybrid position, requiring at least two days per week on campus and sometimes more. An on-campus work station is provided.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual design, multimedia or related field
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the following:
- Creating and designing for digital and print communications, including photographs and video.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated experience in creating visually appealing content to engage diverse audiences, including recruitment materials, educational materials, digital content (infographics, web graphics, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of branding and copyright, including trademark and licensing, logo use, etc.
- Knowledge of various design software including Adobe Creative Suite, web content management systems, photography and other creative platforms.
- Demonstrated understanding of marketing standards, industry practices and consumer trends as related to digital and print media. Demonstrated skill in analyzing situations and providing sound professional judgement on problems dealing with sensitive and sometimes confidential issues.
- Ability to work under continuous time constraints and multiple deadline pressures manage priorities effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including writing correspondence and preparing reports.
- Strong time management, organization, and multi-tasking abilities.
- Ability to establish priorities, adhere to deadlines, have high attention to detail and follow through, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
