Acara Solutions is seeking an Embedded Software Architect for Mission Critical Systems to join our client on a Full Time Direct Hire opportunity located in Carlsbad CA
Overview:
Seeking a self-starter to drive embedded software development from concept to completion. Responsibilities include gathering software requirements, designing system architecture, estimating project effort, executing multiple projects, collaborating with internal teams and customers, and supporting hardware bring-up, including unit integration and verification testing.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and debug embedded firmware for microcontrollers and processors.
  • Support hardware bring-up, including Power-On Self-Test (POST) and Built-In Test (BIT).
  • Develop and integrate bootloaders over serial interfaces.
  • Design, develop, and test software applications using Visual Studio and C#.
  • Implement and validate serial communication protocols (UART, I2C, SPI, USB, Ethernet, MODBUS).
  • Utilize JTAG, ILA, and VIO for debugging and verification.
  • Follow MISRA and CMSIS coding standards.
  • Use LabView, Python, or Arduino for test automation as needed.
Job Requirements
Required Skills / Qualifications:
  • 8+ years in embedded software development for space, defense, or RF systems (6 years with Master's, 3 years with PhD).
Preferred Skills / Qualifications:
  • Experience with Microchip MPLAB, PIC32, ARM Cortex-M, and STM32 in high-reliability or radiation-tolerant environments.
  • Hands-on experience with bootloaders, low-level hardware drivers, serial interfaces, and MODBUS protocols.
  • Expertise in board bring-up, hardware-software integration, and system-level debug.
  • Experience with RTOS, task scheduling, interrupt-driven firmware, and DO-178 or equivalent standards.
  • FPGA integration experience (RTL coding, simulation, SoC interfaces) is a plus.
  • Proficient in embedded C and assembly; able to optimize firmware for performance, reliability, and deterministic behavior.
  • Able to manage multiple projects and collaborate with hardware, RF, FPGA, mechanical, and systems engineering teams as well as defense/space customers.
