Seneca Federal Solutions has an immediate opening for an Archaeologist in the Phoenix, AZ area supporting work with a government customer. Responsibilities Include:
- Serving as a crew member and field lead on archaeological surveys, monitoring, testing, and excavation projects throughout Arizona and adjacent states.
- Identifying, recording, and documenting archaeological features, artifacts, and cultural landscapes in compliance with Section 106, NEPA, and SHPO requirements.
- Assisting with laboratory tasks including washing, cataloging, inventorying, and analyzing artifacts.
- Supporting the preparation of survey forms, site records, technical reports, and cultural resources documentation for agency submittals.
- Coordinating with crew members, supervisors, and agency representatives to ensure compliance with project scopes, health and safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Assisting in GIS mapping, GPS data collection, and database management.
- Participating in stakeholder coordination, including tribal consultation and historic preservation compliance activities.
- Ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality work in remote and sometimes extreme outdoor environments.
Education & Professional Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field (required).
- Master's degree in Archaeology, Cultural Resource Management, Historic Preservation, or related discipline (preferred for archaeologist-level).
- Successful completion of an archaeological field school, including supervised excavation and survey training (required).
- Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) credential (preferred for PI-level roles).
- Coursework including: History of Archaeology, Archaeological Field Methods, Prehistoric & Historic Archaeology, and supporting disciplines such as geology, geography, environmental science, or cultural anthropology (required per OPM standards).
Required Experience:
- 1-3 years of CRM field experience, including Phase I-III surveys, shovel testing, site recording, excavation, and lab work (minimum for technician-level).
- 3-5+ years of progressively responsible experience leading crews, preparing reports, and managing compliance projects (preferred for archaeologist-level).
- Demonstrated experience with NHPA compliance, including Section 106 consultation and documentation.
- Experience preparing and reviewing site forms, NRHP eligibility evaluations, and technical reports.
- Familiarity with developing Memoranda of Agreement (MOAs), Programmatic Agreements (PAs), and mitigation strategies.
- Tribal consultation or tribal engagement experience (highly desirable).
- Experience with NAGPRA compliance and burial recovery protocols.
- Familiarity with ARPA enforcement, site protection measures, and damage assessments (preferred).
- Knowledge of Secretary of the Interior's Standards for historic properties (desired).
- Experience preparing HABS/HAER/HALS documentation and/or interpretive/public history materials (desired).
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with GPS field data collection and GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, ESRI Collector, Survey123).
- Strong technical writing and editing skills for compliance reports, survey documentation, and consultation deliverables.
- Ability to conduct cultural resource literature reviews and synthesize findings into reports and NEPA/Section 106 compliance documents.
- Skilled in artifact identification, cataloging, processing, and curation practices.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply NEPA, NHPA, ARPA, and NAGPRA requirements in project settings.
- Ability to conduct and oversee Phase I-III surveys (identification, evaluation, and data recovery excavations).
- Experience with cultural resource management (CRM) practices on federal, state, and tribal lands.
- Field leadership: supervising and training crews, managing field logistics, ensuring quality data collection.
- Proficiency in site documentation methods, including mapping, sketching, photography, and GPS/GIS integration.
- Familiarity with EA/EIS contributions, technical report preparation, and consultation documents.
- Ability to consult with SHPOs, THPOs, Tribes, and federal/state/local agencies as part of regulatory compliance.
Other Requirements
- Ability to secure necessary permits and permissions for archaeological fieldwork on federal and state lands.
- Willingness to travel extensively and work outdoors in remote or rugged environments under challenging conditions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with tribal staff, agency officials, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate government/field vehicles.
- Physical ability to hike long distances, carry equipment, and perform strenuous fieldwork.
- Ability to assist with or contribute to grant applications related to archaeology, conservation, or historic preservation.
