Job Summary

Under the direction of the Fire Captain, the Fire Specialist 1 responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, hazardous materials emergency incidents, traffic accidents on campus, rescue and other emergency calls to protect life and property; participates in training, drill and independent study activities; participates in the operation and maintenance of fire department apparatus, equipment and facilities; performs various staff support assignments; and performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Comprehensive Physical Ability Test certification (CPAT)
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • Applicants will participate in pre-employment FireTEAM testing. A passing score must be attained on all components of the examination.
  • A valid California Driver's License is required at the time of appointment. Once hired, Firefighters are required to obtain and maintain a Class C with Firefighter Endorsement, in accordance with Fire Department Procedures, as a condition of employment.
  • Candidates must provide proof of a valid CPAT card issued in the previous 12 months by the interview date in order to participate in the interview panel.
  • A valid EMT certification is not a requirement for application or hire, but is required as a condition of employment. Candidates must either provide proof of a CA or national registry EMT certification or successfully pass a national registry-approved EMT course during the initial probation period. The department will coordinate and support any EMT courses required.
  • Qualified applicants will participate in a panel interview process. A passing score must be obtained in order to proceed in the process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a volunteer, seasonal, or career firefighter.
  • Experience as a UCD student firefighter.
  • Experience providing emergency or non-emergency medical services.

Department Overview

The Fire Specialist I is a member of the Operations/Training unit which is comprised of three platoons of career and student firefighters, providing 24 hour, 7 days-per-week emergency response on the UC Davis Campus and adjacent communities pursuant to automatic and mutual aid agreements.

Work Environment

For lateral applicants, sufficient prior work experience or completion of a structure fire academy may be accepted on a case-by-case basis to exempt them from the Sacramento Fire Academy requirement.

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

Upon hire, must successfully complete the Sacramento Regional Academy. The department will coordinate and support academy participation. Must pass a pre-employment medical evaluation, possess current and valid CPAT certification and maintain a fit-for-duty medical status. Must participate in State and department required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which may include blood tests, immunizations, TB screening, Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogen training, etc. Haz Mat Technician or Specialist certification or must successfully complete training within one year from date of hire. The department will coordinate and support all HazMat training. Once complete, employee will receive additional pay for certification. Must obtain and maintain a California driver's license with Firefighter endorsement and medical certificate within 6 months of date of hire. Must be able to work flexible hours that include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Work occasional overtime.
