Join the Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) team, where you'll contribute to groundbreaking innovations! We are seeking an experienced GN&C Engineer to join our Strategic Military Space (SMS) Division. The emphasis will be on advanced spacecraft guidance, navigation, and control systems-including mission design, algorithm development, flight software, and on-orbit operations-for satellites performing critical missions. The role of a Senior GN&C Engineer is leadership-oriented, requiring not only deep technical expertise but also the ability to mentor, guide, and lead teams. Senior Engineers are generally asked to provide technical leadership, support reviews across multiple programs, and serve as trusted advisors to SDL and our government partners.

The Strategic & Military Space Division delivers advanced satellite and sensor systems that support the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community. Key Responsibilities:
  • Serves as a technical expert helping to solve or address the lab's most complex GN&C issues and opportunities
  • Provides technical leadership in the design, analysis, integration, and operations of GN&C systems for advanced space missions
  • Leads the development and validation of GN&C algorithms, models, simulations, and flight software
  • Defines and analyzes mission concepts, conducts trade studies, and ensures robust GN&C solutions that meet mission objectives
  • Oversees software testing, integration, and operational checkout of flight systems
  • Documents and presents results of design, analysis, and test activities to SDL leadership and external customers
  • Represents SDL at design reviews, technical symposia, and government meetings
  • Mentors and develops junior Engineers, fostering technical excellence and teamwork

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering or a related STEM field
  • 16+ years of relevant experience (or 12+ years with a PhD)
  • Broad knowledge of GN&C with expertise in several of the following areas:
    • Astrodynamics / Orbital Mechanics
    • Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO)
    • Attitude Dynamics and Controls (ADC)
    • Spacecraft Navigation / Orbit Determination
    • Spacecraft Guidance / Optimization
    • Spacecraft Propulsion
  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink or similar tools
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to mentor mid-level Engineers and contribute to technical growth across the lab
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must have or be able to obtain a DoD security clearance
  • Must be able to travel occasionally to contractor and customer facilities

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Aerospace Engineering or related STEM field
  • Experience serving as a technical advisor to Program Managers in proposals, reviews, and program execution
  • Ability to cultivate business development relationships
  • Experience leading technical teams in the development of new technologies
  • Experience working with the DOD and IC
  • Active DoD Top Secret/SCI clearance or current SSBI (<4 years old)

*Salary Range
  • $143,000 - $222,000
    • Salary commensurate based on education and relevant experience
