Student Employment Coordinator

The Opportunity

The Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science seeks a Student Employment Coordinator to play a pivotal role in supporting the college's academic mission. Reporting to the Director of Student Services, this position manages all aspects of hourly student employment for the college, directly impacting thousands of students and the faculty who teach them.

Key Responsibilities

Student Employment:

  • Manage recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and payroll for 1,400+ undergraduate course staff and other student employees each year.

  • Oversee student employment processes, including payroll approval, timecard review, and recordkeeping.

  • Coordinate mandatory trainings and communicate employment policies to students and faculty.

  • Support hiring for student research assistants, events, and special programs.

Compliance and Financial Controls:

  • Serve as the college's subject matter expert on student employment policies and procedures.

  • Ensure all hiring, payroll, and timekeeping practices comply with federal, state, and university regulations.

  • Certify employment eligibility (e.g., Form I-9) and monitor adherence to mandatory trainings.

  • Review and approve student timecards, addressing discrepancies as needed.

  • Implement enhanced financial controls through systematic monitoring.

  • Stay current on policy changes and advise stakeholders on compliance requirements.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Partner with campus offices-including Financial Aid and Student Employment, Workday, Continuing Education, and HR-and build effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, department leadership, and deans.

Process and Data Management:

  • Maintain accurate employment records, dashboards, and reports; analyze hiring trends and payroll data to inform decision making.

  • Recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance.

This is a full-time (39 hours/week) endowed position that is based in Ithaca, NY. This position follows a 3:2 campus-to-home hybrid work arrangement. This hybrid work arrangement is subject to change at any time. Work hours may be either 8am-4:30pm, 8:30-5:00pm or 9am-5:30pm, as mutually agreed upon by both parties. There is an expectation that this role will work occasional evening and/or weekend hours to support events, as well as annually on Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day weekend to support Bowers and University Commencement activities.

The Bowers Student Services team is dedicated to supporting the college's undergraduate educational mission through academic advising, programming, and other initiatives that prioritize student experience, success, belonging, and well-being.

What We Need

We are seeking a team member who demonstrates attention to detail, strategic thinking and technological proficiency. Additionally, you will have:

  • An associate's degree and four to six years' relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and community members.

  • Ability to learn, operate in compliance with, and advise on, federal, state, and university student employment policies, procedures, and best practices, and to serve as a centralized college resource/subject matter expert on the same.

  • Excellent technical skills, including Microsoft Excel advanced formulas, functions, and pivot tables, Word/Outlook mail merge function, Google Suite, and a facility for learning new technology and systems.

  • Experience with analyzing, synthesizing, and compiling data effectively and using data to prepare summaries, reports, dashboards, and other materials.

  • Strong detail-orientation and organizational skills, including the ability to manage and track projects and tasks, organize and meet deadlines, juggle multiple priorities, and stay on top of heavy email traffic.

  • Excellent written communication skills (including error-free spelling and grammar) and the ability to effectively write and edit professional, non-standard correspondence, marketing materials, outreach to faculty, and other communications.

  • Ingenuity and resourcefulness in identifying opportunities to solve problems and streamline operations.

  • Sound professional judgment and the ability to exercise a high degree of discretion in dealing with confidential information in accordance with university policies and federal regulations (FERPA).

  • Ability to recruit, select, and supervise short-term student employees hired to work Student Services events.

  • Bachelor's degree and prior experience with student employment or human resources.

  • Experience recruiting, selecting, hiring, and/or supervising staff, student workers, and/or volunteers.

  • Experience using Workday, Qualtrics or other survey software, Salesforce CRM, and/or relational databases.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Employees typically perform this role
    remotely 2 days per week and on-campus 3 days per week. The university reserves the right to modify, suspend, revoke or terminate the hybrid work arrangement at any time.

  • This position is based in Ithaca, New York. Employees who work remotely may receive
    multiple W-2 Forms depending on their work location. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholding for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside of New York State.
