First Merchants Bank is seeking a Commercial Fulfillment Trainee to join our team! This position will provide an analytical review of due diligence and creation of loan closing documents ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements using guided instruction to resolve issues for non-real estate secured loans, including but not limited to Commercial and Industrial (C&I) Loans. Provide quality customer service through accurate and efficient processing from approval through closing. Position ensures completion of commercial fulfillment based on the loan structure, conditions, and collateral. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Complete accurate, unbiased due diligence review within required timelines and according to standards; Customer Identification Program (CIP), entity validation, facility structure, collateral security.
- Validate authorized approval, analyze deal details outlined in approval to file support.
- Analyze and interpret entity documents, including but not limited to, Certificate of Existence, Assumed Name Searches, Trust Agreements, and other legal documents as necessary to determine and validate legally binding authorities for all parties executing legal documents at closing.
- Analyze and reconcile any variances between the details outlined within the approval to the loan file support source documents to ensure that the desired lien position is properly perfected.
- Review collateral details from the approval and ensure that the security interest is appropriately documented in the legal agreements and that the collateral is properly secured.
- Validate fulfillment of regulatory requirements for commercial lending applications.
- Validate all regulations, specific criteria of the loan programs offered through the FMB Commercial platform (Government Lending, Private Wealth, Practice Finance, and Secured Credit) have been met or will be met and documents to support.
- Analyze, draft, finalize, and deliver high-quality legal documents that are consistent with credit approval and compliant with state and federal laws and regulations.
- Analyze deal structure to determine appropriate legal closing documents required.
- Prepare the appropriate legal agreements to ensure that the level of risk that has been approved is documented in accordance with Federal and State regulations.
- Ensure the obligations between all responsible parties and the bank are accurately documented and completely fulfilled.
- Provide quality control review during document preparation of commercial approved loans and serve as a subject matter expert for documentation and perfection.
- Provide loan documentation packet to Line of Business with appropriate closing instructions and additional required documents if needed.
- Work closely with Business Partners and Management by researching discrepancies to facilitate and resolve issues on new loan transactions, modifications and renewals.
- Identify, analyze, and balance gray areas of risk / exceptions
- Provide solutions and / or elevate to obtain appropriate approvals as necessary
- Communicate issues to management and / or LOB as needed
- Understand the importance of balancing service and risk * Develop expertise on commercial collateral types, including but not limited to Commercial and Industrial (C&I) Loans.
- Provide timely and accurate customer service in a professional manner to customers, employees, vendors and all other inquiries.
- Independently manage assigned pipeline and other reports documenting performance in meeting service level requirements.
- Prioritize time to effectively handle pipeline, change requests, communication from the line of business, and ensure closing dates are met.
- Be prompt, accurate and cordial in completing all necessary tasks and assignments as delegated by management.
- Exercise moderate independent judgement to determine legal closing documents and loan file support meets compliance and policies / procedures.
- Offer process / procedure improvement suggestions and raise illogical situations / findings to management.
- Assist with testing changes / improvements to programs within the department.
- Work collaboratively and demonstrate teamwork, yet also work independently and take initiative when necessary.
- Possess strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and remain calm when working in a fast-paced / deadline driven environment.
- Maintain file coverage for team members out of the office.
- Attend and participate in department, process, and policy meetings.
- Assist with departmental projects as directed by management.
To be successful in this position, we require the following:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
The following would be a plus:
- Associate degree or bachelor's degree in business or a related field of study.
- Experience with Core Processing / Loan tracking solutions.
- Experience in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access).
- Commercial / business banking experience.
- Experience with loan document origination systems (LaserPro preferred).
