Job Description - CNC Lathe Machinist

The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for setting up, programming, operating, and maintaining CNC lathes to produce precision parts from metal and other materials. This role requires expertise in turning processes, tooling, blueprint reading, CNC programming, and a strong commitment to producing parts that meet strict tolerance and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Set-Up & Programming

Set up CNC lathes for production runs, selecting appropriate tooling, fixtures, and workholding methods (chucks, collets, centers, etc.).

Load and verify CNC programs, making necessary offsets, edits, and adjustments to achieve required tolerances.

Properly secure and align workpieces for accurate turning operations.

Machining Operations

Operate CNC lathes to perform machining tasks such as turning, facing, threading, boring, grooving, and drilling.

Monitor machine performance and adjust cutting speeds, feeds, and tool paths as needed.

Troubleshoot machining issues, including tool wear, chatter, surface finish, or dimensional deviations.

Blueprint Interpretation

Read and interpret blueprints, CAD models, and technical drawings.

Translate specifications into machining instructions and setups.

Verify part dimensions and tolerances to ensure compliance with engineering and customer requirements.

Quality Control

Conduct first-article inspections and in-process checks using calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, and other precision measuring tools.

Document inspection results and ensure all parts meet strict tolerances.

Work with the quality team to resolve dimensional or process-related issues.

Safety and Efficiency

Follow all safety policies and wear required PPE (safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, hearing protection, etc.).

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Look for ways to improve machining efficiency, reduce cycle time, and extend tool life.

Documentation and Reporting

Record setup data, offsets, and production activity in the shop management system.

Maintain accurate records of completed work orders, inspection data, and production output.

Report equipment malfunctions, tooling shortages, or delays promptly to supervisors.

Continuous Improvement

Stay current on CNC lathe technology, tooling advancements, and machining techniques.

Suggest and implement process improvements to enhance productivity and accuracy.

Participate in training programs, workshops, and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certification in CNC machining preferred.

3+ years of experience operating and setting up CNC lathes in a manufacturing environment.

Strong knowledge of G-code, M-code, tool offsets, and CNC programming principles.

Experience with multi-axis turning centers, live tooling, or CAM software a plus.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.

Stand, walk, bend, and perform machining tasks for 8-10 hours per shift.

Strong hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and depth perception for precision machining.

Comfortable working in environments with noise, vibration, and varying temperatures.
