Position Summary
The Physician Assistant (PA) reflects the mission, vision, and values of University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, adheres to the UI Health Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and other regulatory and accreditation standards. As an integral member of the Anesthesia Clinic team, the PA is responsible for the assessment and focused history and physical for patients across the age continuum, under the supervision of the Anesthesiologist. This includes the evaluation, diagnosis, and counseling of pre-operative patients.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Scope of Practice:
  • Perform physical examinations. Take focused medical histories on patients referred for pre-operative anesthesia evaluation by academic and community physicians. Assessments are performed both in-person and via telehealth.
  • Perform chart reviews. Request additional documentation, order laboratory tests, xrays, special imaging studies, and other diagnostic procedures as needed.
  • Diagnostically interpret tests/procedures, to the extent of recognizing deviations from the norm, common laboratory, radiologic, vascular, and other diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiologic processes in consultation with the Attending Anesthesiologist.
  • Determine patient readiness for surgery and develop perioperative anesthetic management plan in conjunction with Attending Anesthesiologist.

  • Clearly understands the implications of situations and uses sound judgment when dealing with multiple disciplines.

  • Acts as a resource for clinical staff in the practice setting.
  • Consults with management in assessment, problem-solving, decision-making, and evaluating clinical/system issues and models of care.
  • Identifies and participates in quality-improvement initiatives within the practice setting and initiates change as appropriate.
  • May participate in the development and revision of protocols or guidelines to reflect evidence-based changes in care management. May participate in activities that influence policy-making bodies to improve patient care.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Graduation from an accredited PA program with Masters or Doctoral Degree in Medical Science.
    • Current license as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois required.
    • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.
    • Current controlled substance licensure required.
    • Current National Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
    • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between physician, APRN and PA providers as well as college and hospital leadership and the multi-disciplinary team.
    • Demonstrated experience in leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, interpersonal communication, education, clinical experience and change management required.
    • Documentation in the medical record to substantiate accurate billing.
