Job Summary: The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing safety and health programs within the day-to-day station operations with a focus on injury prevention and regulatory compliance. Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Influence and motivate others to work in a safe manner and communicate safety requirements to all employees.
- Coordinate and implement compliance with OSHA and company safety standards.
- Implement the Company's Safety and Health Management program and ensure that all items are compliant with OSHA standards, NRG procedures and other regulatory agencies.
- Coordinate with management of the facility on regulatory interpretation, timely internal and external reporting, and overall safety and health compliance.
- Conduct internal safety and health audits and incremental inspections of the facility to ensure compliance.
- Investigate causes of accidents and incidents then makes recommendations to ensure the prevention of recurrences.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs, designs improvements, and works with management to implement identified improvements.
- Evaluate, develop, and assist with delivering training programs to improve skills in the safety aspects of employees' jobs.
Working Conditions:
- Office and Power Plant environment
- Normal office environment and/or out of doors work environment including working at heights above 100', high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas.
- Willingness to work outside normal business hours as necessary, especially during critical issue resolution and to achieve project milestones.
- Requires occasional travel.
- Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, etc.).
- May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals and hot equipment/environments.
- Requires operation of a personal computer.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED
- A minimum of five years full time Safety experience. In lieu of five years Safety experience, ten years industry related experience with safety responsibilities may be considered
- Certificated Safety Professional, Occupational Health& Safety Technologist, or Certified Industrial Hygienist or ability to become certified
- Must have valid state driver's license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous power plant safety and health experience
- Bachelor's degree in industrial safety and health or related discipline
- SGE (Special Government Employee Program) experience in with site audits
- VPP (Voluntary Protection Program) champion
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work with minimum direct supervision.
- Strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements including OSHA regulations.
- Understanding of Process Safety Management requirements.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of OSHA's electrical generation and power distribution standard.
- Must possess functional computer skills specifically in Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to run a functional safety committee/sub-committee with agendas, meeting minutes, and a charter.
- Ability to speak in front of large groups effectively.
- Basic understanding of occupational health and industrial hygiene principles.
- Ability to positively interact with regulatory agencies.
- Ability to interact effectively in a team environment and with individuals at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to compile, analyze, interpret data and write detailed reports.
- An understanding of the factors that influence human behavior.
- Ability to conduct incident and root cause analyses.
- Ability to prioritize tasks within a fast-paced dynamic environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Stand, walk, climb ladders, bend, kneel, crawl, pull/push and lift up to 25 pounds.
- Perform work both indoors and outdoors, occasionally in adverse conditions.
- Wear job related personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work at heights above 100' and enter enclosed vessels or confined spaces.
