Position Overview
The Associate Dean will hold a 0.9 FTE administrative appointment in the College Dean's Office. In collaboration with the Executive Dean, the Associate Dean will offer primary support for the Arts, Languages, and several Interdisciplinary Studies units in the College. The remaining 0.1 FTE of the appointment will focus on scholarly research in the individual's home academic department(s).

The Associate Dean is appointed by, reports to, and serves at the pleasure of the Executive Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The appointment is expected to have a start date of July 1, 2026, and an end date of June 30, 2031.

Job Description

90% Associate Dean Duties:

Assist and advise the Executive Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the administration of academic policy, budget, and personnel matters within the College.

The responsibilities of the Associate Dean include the following:

  • Providing effective liaison between the Executive Dean and chairpersons/directors of assigned units. Chairpersons/directors of the assigned units will report to the Associate Dean.

  • Fostering academic excellence in assigned units and exploring innovative approaches to liberal arts and sciences;

  • Being an effective advocate for the role of the liberal arts and sciences in the formulation of institutional and public policy;

  • Assisting in the recruitment, development, hiring, and retention of outstanding College faculty;

  • Assisting in the recruitment of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students, recognizing their importance in the successful development of teaching and research programs of the highest quality;

  • Providing leadership in maintaining the vigor of graduate studies and research programs, with active involvement in seeking both internal and external resources;

  • A commitment to fostering a culture of collaboration and belonging for faculty, staff, and students in the Dean's Office and throughout the College;

  • Assisting the Executive Dean in providing programs consistent with the needs of students and society, evaluating and reviewing the effectiveness of programs, and anticipating and planning for future development of such programs;

  • Assisting the Executive Dean in fostering effective relationships between the College Dean's Office and university-level offices such as the Office of the Provost, the offices of the vice provosts, the Office of Research, etc.;

  • Assisting the Executive Dean in fostering effective relationships between College academic programs and those of other schools of the University, including committee service;

  • Assisting the Executive Dean in formulating, defending, and managing efficiently and fairly the budget of the College, with the aims of (a) securing resources for support of assigned units, and (b) allocating these resources in accordance with the best interests of the College;

  • Assisting the Executive Dean in activities related to fundraising through the KU Endowment Association;

  • Other duties, as assigned by the Executive Dean, to ensure efficient operation of the College

10% Professor Responsibilities:

10% Research

  • Engage in scholarly research, including publishing appropriate peer-reviewed books and articles and presenting papers at professional conferences on a regular basis.


Required Qualifications
Evaluation of the following qualifications will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application and (2) record of accomplishments and productivity documented in curriculum vitae.
  • Position as a tenured full professor in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences;
  • Position in a unit in the Arts, Languages, Interdisciplinary Studies, or Humanities of the College;
  • Excellence in scholarship and a commitment to a liberal education;
  • Capacity for leadership in a comprehensive university;
  • Sensitivity and commitment to faculty, and to student concerns and interests; and
  • Expertise in student, staff, and faculty development.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Administrative and budgetary experience based in leading a unit and holding primary responsibility for its activities and execution (e.g., chair/director of a program, center, institute, department, or school);
  • Leadership experience in departmental, College, or University activities dealing with academic and administrative matters.
