Our Opening and Your Responsibilities
Summary: The Systems Engineer in this role will be a key part of our Semi Automated Liquid Handling product development team working on next-generation automated pipetting systems for the life sciences research and diagnostics markets. The person in this role will have a multidisciplinary background and will be responsible for bridging mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to design, integrate, and validate complex automation systems that deliver precision liquid handling for medium-throughput applications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Define and document system-level requirements, interfaces, and performance specifications for automated liquid handling platforms.
* Lead the integration of mechanical subsystems (e.g., pipetting heads, motion systems, accessories), electronics, sensors, and control software into cohesive products.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, marketing and applications) to ensure seamless end-to-end functionality.
* Develop system models and simulations to predict performance and inform design trade-offs.
* Evaluate, select, and validate hardware components (actuators, pumps, valves, sensors, fluidics) to meet system requirements.
* Debug complex electromechanical issues using systematic root cause analysis and structured problem-solving methods.
* Plan and execute system-level verification and validation (V&V) activities, including functional, performance, and reliability testing.
* Analyze test data to confirm system compliance with requirements and regulatory standards (ISO 13485, IEC 61010, etc.).
* Support design transfer to manufacturing and provide technical guidance through production ramp-up.
* Author and maintain system-level documentation, including requirements specifications, design descriptions, and risk analyses (per ISO 14971).
* Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools, and best practices
* Ability to mentor less experienced personnel. What You Need to Succeed
* A minimum of a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or related scientific or engineering field is required.
* Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering preferred.
* Ten or more years of experience as part of a product development team creating complex automated and semi-automated laboratory instrumentation (or equivalent) preferred.
* Three or more years of experience in a systems engineering or systems architect role involving complex semi-automated laboratory automation or equivalent preferred.
* Excellent organizational skills and attention to details.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Experience with SolidWorks CAD tools a plus.
* Familiarity with UI design principles.
* Ability to lead and mentor less senior engineers and team members.
