Position Summary Information
Minimum Qualifications |
- Master's degree in Occupational Therapy, three years experience in outpatient pediatric OT.
- 3 years of experience working with pediatric populations from birth to adolescence with diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, sensory processing disorder, developmental delay, genetic disorders, disorders related to extreme prematurity and low birth weight, congenital disabilities and trauma.

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required) |
- Experience conducting evaluations and providing interventions tailored to children with various developmental, sensory, motor and behavioral challenges.
- Experience with one or more of the following: sensory integration/ sensory processing disorders, assistive technology, feeding therapy, and neurodevelopmental techniques.
- Experience interacting with other disciplines (speech-language pathology, social work, music therapy) in an interprofessional clinical setting.
- Experience providing clinical supervision of MSOT students in Level 1 or Level 2 fieldwork placements.

Description of the Department or Unit |
The
Department of Rehabilitation Sciences includes fully accredited graduate programs in Athletic Training and Speech-Language Pathology, a new graduate program in Occupational Therapy (full accreditation expected in 2026), an undergraduate program in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and minors in American Sign Language and Communication Sciences and Disorders. Our students are trained to empower people of all ages to improve/restore their functional abilities, fulfill their daily routines and roles, mitigate limitations or disabilities following injury or illness, and live full lives in the context of differing abilities. In addition, the department is home to the Charles and Geneva S. Scott Scottish Rite Communication Disorders Clinic, which provides speech, language, hearing, and pediatric occupational therapy services as an outreach to the community and as a primary site for student clinical training. Students who graduate from the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences will transition into their respective positions as quality healthcare practitioners with enhanced clinical skills, knowledge, and values. They will be well-prepared to improve the health and wellness of people across the region, state, and world. Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences in the Beaver College of Health Sciences
(
BCHS) at Appalachian State University invites applications for a pediatric occupational
therapist to provide services on our Boone campus and provide clinical education to
graduate students. The primary worksite will be the Interprofessional Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness Clinic on the first floor of University Hall on the Boone campus.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Provide pediatric outpatient evaluation and treatment services in the areas of sensory integration/sensory processing and feeding/eating.
- Provide screening evaluations for infants and toddlers as part of an interdisciplinary program for the early detection of complex medical disorders.
- Interact with other disciplines (speech-language pathology, social work, music therapy) in an interprofessional clinical setting.
- Provide clinical supervision for MSOT students in Level 1 and Level 2 fieldwork assignments.
- Document service provision according to clinic and payor guidelines.

Physical Demands of Position |
Must be able to move around a clinic, including standing, squatting, sitting and working with clients on the floor. Must be able to move and maneuver pieces of equipment up to 40 pounds in weight, lift small children to enable access to equipment, lift equipment overhead, and straighten the clinic between clients. |

ABD Description |
ABD with reduction in rank and salary:
ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since
ABD will not meet the minimum requirements,
ABD will not be considered. |
