General Description of the Job Class

Manage and supervise functions of Duke Cardiopulmonary (CP) Rehabilitation; ensure effective delivery of clinical patient care and compliance with administrative and clinical policies and procedures.


Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Patient Care & Compliance

  • Manage and supervise delivery of patient care for Cardiac Rehab and Pulmonary Rehab programs.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical patient care standards, regulatory requirements, and established policies and procedures.
  • Assess clinical needs based on customer feedback (e.g., physicians, patients) and develop programs to meet those needs.


Operations Management

  • Manage outpatient CP Rehab operations, including:
  • Program development
  • Liaison with CR/PR medical directors and referring providers
  • Budget management (labor and operational)
  • Volume growth


Strategic Planning

  • Participate in development of strategic planning, program development, and operational plans for clinical areas.


Team Leadership

  • Manage an interdisciplinary team: Exercise Physiologists (EP), Registered Nurses (RN), Physical Therapists (PT), Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA), Respiratory Therapists (RT), Registered Dietician (RD), Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC).
  • Understand scopes of practice for all team members.
  • Possess knowledge of Cardiac Rehab/Pulmonary Rehab/Physical Therapy/Respiratory Therapy billing practices.


Mentorship & Professional Development

  • Support and mentor CR/PR/PT team supervisors.
  • Promote a professional clinical model encouraging staff participation in developing clinical standards.
  • Foster collaboration, collegiality, and use of current trends/data in clinical and administrative practice.
  • Communicate department and organizational mission clearly.
  • Serve as a voice for therapy staff to administration and leadership.
  • Advocate for staff and patients to ensure optimal care.


Change Management

  • Serve as a professional role model and mentor.
  • Respond positively to change and support colleagues through transitions.
  • Act as a change agent to facilitate communication and alignment with organizational mission.


Diversity & Inclusion

  • Ensure a unit-based workforce that values and reflects diversity.


Administrative Oversight

  • Maintain required records, reports, and statistics.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality control (POCT), PI, safety, environmental, and infection control.
  • Communicate requirements to staff and hold them accountable.
  • Coordinate development, implementation, and evaluation of policies to improve operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate QC/PI activities with appropriate staff.


Personnel Management

  • Oversee hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations, and related activities.


Workforce Planning

  • Plan, schedule, and organize work for the team.
  • Ensure proper distribution and delegation of assignments.
  • Efficiently utilize personnel, space, and facilities.
  • Maintain accountability for inventory, equipment, and supplies.


Clinical Oversight

  • Ensure effective and efficient operation of clinical areas and staff.
  • Ensure orders, treatments, plans of care, and clinical pathways support patient care and recovery.
  • Ensure complete and accurate documentation of patient care.


Budget & Resource Management

  • Collaborate with Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) to determine fiscal requirements.
  • Prepare budgetary recommendations.
  • Monitor resource utilization and determine appropriateness.
  • Develop action plans with ACNO to ensure budget/resource efficiency and patient satisfaction.


Equipment & Supply Coordination

  • Communicate potential equipment or supply issues to support teams.


Safety & Incident Reporting

  • Review and follow up on SRSs related to teams or patients in conjunction with Director of Rehabilitative Services.


Billing & Collections

  • Ensure staff completes proper documentation for billing and payment collection.
  • Collaborate with PRMO staff to resolve and improve billing and collection processes.


Other Duties

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.


Preferred Qualifications

A background in Physical Therapy (PT) is preferred due to the clinical and operational nature of the role within Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation.


Required Qualifications at this Level
Education

Required: Graduate from an accredited Bachelor's program in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Pathology, or Audiology.

Preferred: Master's or Doctorate in one of the above fields.


Experience

Based on educational level, minimum requirements are:

Bachelor's Degree:



  • 4 years relevant clinical experience
  • 5 years leadership experience


Master's Degree:



  • 4 years relevant clinical experience
  • 4 years leadership experience


Doctoral Degree:



  • 4 years relevant clinical experience
  • 3 years leadership experience


Licensure & Certification

Current North Carolina licensure and any applicable certification/registry to practice Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Pathology, or Audiology.
