The College of Health and Human Performance provides instruction, conducts research, and performs service in health education and promotion, kinesiology, human development and family science, social work, interior design and merchandising, and recreation sciences and sport management. The mission of the College of Health and Human Performance is to improve health, well-being, and quality of life. The primary focus of the college is to advance and disseminate knowledge concerning maintenance and enhancement of health and quality of life. |
Job Duties |
The primary duties of this position will involve research and community service programs in the Human Performance Laboratory (
HPL). The Research Associate will assist with the research and community service activities of the
HPL under the direction of the
HPL Director, Associate Director, and Program Coordinator. The activities take place at several
ECU sites (Ward Sports Medicine,
FITT Bldg,
ECDOI).
The duties of this position include:
Research - 50% The Research Associate will assist with coordination of research efforts in the Human Performance Laboratory (
HPL). Duties include assisting with, and in many cases independently conducting, participant screening and scheduling, maximal and submaximal exercise testing, static and dynamic strength assessments, exercise training sessions, anthropometry body composition assessments, whole-body exercise and resting metabolic measurements. This position will also be responsible for biological sample handling and storage. The Research Associate will have the ability to perform tests and assessments according to detailed research protocols and/or best practices while ensuring the safety of participants, students, and staff. The Research Associate will be responsible for ensuring that the studies are conducted in accordance with study protocols and will oversee and lead collection methods. The position will have a basic knowledge of research principles, study design, methods of data collection, interpretation, and basic statistical analysis. Additional duties include calibration, maintenance and care of laboratory equipment, supplies inventory, and supervision of students both graduate and undergraduate. The Research Associate may lead in certain aspects of the research effort at the discretion of the
HPL Director.
Community Service - 50%
The Human Performance Lab (
HPL) has a long-standing service program, The Cardiovascular Health Assessment Program, which provides exercise screening to primarily first responders (fire and police departments). The Research Associate will assist the program coordinator to ensure that it runs smoothly with other activities in the
HPL and that there are no time/equipment conflicts. The Research Associate will be tasked with exercise stress testing and
EKG interpretation while helping supervise the students on how to conduct the tests. These positions will also interact with the on-sight physician or PA concerning the health status of the participants in the program.

Minimum Education/Experience |
Relevant master's degree; or relevant BS/BA with three years of relevant work experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
- Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
ACSM EP or CEP Certification- High Organizational Skills
- Experience in body compositional testing, exercise testing, blood pressure, and blood processing
- Experience in reading EKGs at rest and during exercise
- Experience in record keeping and study documentation
- Completion of human research protections training
