The approximate Fellowship dates will be from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027, although there is some flexibility in the dates. The deadline for applications is January 12, 2026. Phone interviews will be conducted with finalists, and we plan to fill the position by March 1st, 2026.

Purpose

The Orthopaedic Value-Based Health Care Fellow supports faculty in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care, primarily within the Musculoskeletal Institute at UT Health Austin. This one-year fellowship is designed for medical students and focuses on research, strategy, and clinical exposure related to value-based care delivery models. The Fellow works closely with orthopaedic surgeons, researchers, and administrative leaders to design, implement, and evaluate care models that improve patient outcomes and reduce costs. Peer roles include Clinical Research Fellow, Health Policy Fellow, and Quality Improvement Analyst. The Fellow typically reports to the Associate Director of Research and collaborates with faculty such as the Director of Value-Based Health Care and Outcome Measurement.

Responsibilities Conducts Research on Value-Based Care Models

* Develops and refines research protocols.

* Manages IRB submissions and compliance.

* Collects and analyzes patient-reported outcomes.

* Prepares abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts.

* Collects and manages patient data.

Facilitates Patient Engagement and Data Collection

* Recruits patients in the Lower Extremity Integrated Practice Unit (IPU)

* Serves as the patient-reported outcome measure facilitator

* Supervises medical and undergraduate student volunteers

* Ensures data integrity and follow-up compliance

* Coordinates with clinical teams for patient tracking

Supports Strategic and Operational Projects

* Facilitates patient-reported outcome measures

* Participates in quality improvement initiatives

* Attends business strategy meetings

* Coordinates with clinical and administrative teams

* Tracks project milestones

Disseminates Research Findings

* Prepares abstracts and manuscripts

* Develops presentations for internal and external audiences

* Contributes to publications and conferences

* Synthesizes data for stakeholder reporting

* Engages in peer review and feedback cycle

Performs Ancillary Research Tasks

* Conducts literature reviews

* Enters and analyzes data

* Supports administrative functions

* Assists with grant applications

* Maintains research documentation

Required Qualifications

Accepted to or enrolled in a U.S. medical school (MD or DO track). 1 year of relevant research or clinical experience. Strong critical thinking and communication skills. Basic understanding of statistics. Ability to work independently and in teams. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of core clinical clerkships. 2 years of research experience with publications. Demonstrated interest in value-based health care. Proficiency in Spanish. Experience with digital health tools and analytic. CITI Program certification for human subjects research

Salary Range

$35,568.00
